Greenwood, Missouri, police said a man is in custody after he reportedly attempted to drown his 6-month-old child in a pond.

Police said a man walked into the Greenwood Police Department just after 10 a.m. Monday and said he had just drowned his daughter. Officers learned the infant's location from the man and rushed to the area. When they arrived, they found the girl floating face-up in the pond.

Probable cause documents state 28-year-old Jonathon Stephen Zicarelli appeared "emotionally removed" when he told officers he drowned his infant in the pond by the soccer fields on Doc Henry Road.

When Calhoun and Hallgrimson arrived on scene, they found the girl in an icy pond floating face-up. She appeared lethargic, her eyes were wide, and she appeared lifeless. As she was pulled from the pond police noted she had mud in her eyes, grass and water in her mouth, and was barely moving.

Greenwood police Cpl. Thomas Calhoun used CPR and was able to get the child to breathe normally. Police believe the infant had been in the water for more than 10 minutes.

Charging documents state Zicarelli told officers he had planned to kill the child for more than 24 hours after having "bad thoughts." He reportedly said he tried to drown the child because he was trying to make things easier on his wife who was stressed out due to the holiday and trying to provide for the family.

Documents state Zicarelli told officers he drove by the pond, parked his car, then walked down to the water three times trying to determine if he would kill the child. He ultimately placed the baby in the water and watched her sink before driving to the Greenwood Police Department to confess his actions.

Police said the child's condition was last listed as stable, however she was being treated for hypothermia. Her body temperature was 87.9 degrees when she arrived at the hospital - more than 10 degrees below a normal body temperature.

Soit never occurred to him that he might could just help his wife/girlfriend to provide for the family and the holidays? He thought it a better idea to drown the baby. I'm so glad Baby Girl that you are smarter than your sperm donor.

I think he just reached the involuntary committable zone. Hope he never gets out.

Seems to me that having a young'un drowned by her father would radically increase his wife's stress, not lessen it. What am I missing?

There is a "diving reflex" that certain oceanic mammals are blessed with. In action, it slows the basal metabolism down to almost nothing. The same reflex seems to operate in little'uns like this one. Much more often than not, they have zero complications or sequelae following immersion in cold water.

I bet he thinks that the wife does all the cooking and cleaning and caring for the baby and now she's working she wants him to take a share of that load too.
His solution was clearly get rid of the baby rather than do woman's work.

This child has an angel watching out for her.

Hopefully after this she is safe and away from her father.

The former Greenwood, Missouri, police chief was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury for allegedly assaulting a handcuffed man.

Greg Hallgrimson, 50, of Kansas City, Missouri, is accused of throwing the man, identified in court documents as "J.Z.," to the ground and hitting him in the face with his fist while J.Z. was restrained, sitting handcuffed in a chair.

J.Z. did not present a threat to Hallgrimson or others at the time of the alleged attack, according to a release from office of Timothy Garrison, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

In June, Hallgrimson resigned from the force amid the allegations.

41 Action News reported at the time that Hallgrimson had been hailed as a hero for saving a baby whose father had put it in a pond in December 2018.

Hallgrimson and another office rescued the baby, which had mud in its eyes, grass and water in its mouth and was barely moving.

Hallgrimson used his uniform shirt to warm the baby while the other officer performed CPR.

In June, Zicarelli's attorney said the then-police chief grabbed Zicarelli by the neck and threw him to the ground before punching him in the head and face.

Another officer pulled Hallgrimson off Zicarelli, the attorney said.

Zicarelli faces two charges in Jackson County: first-degree domestic assault and abuse or neglect of a child.

A former suburban Kansas City police chief who helped rescue a baby from an icy pond and later assaulted the man accused of trying to kill the infant has pleaded guilty in the case.

Greg Hallgrimson, 51, pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday, the Kansas City Star reported. He was indicted in 2019 on a single count of violating the civil rights of Jonathon Zicarelli.

Prosecutors have said Hallgrimson threw a handcuffed Zicarelli to the ground, punched him in the face and told Zicarelli, “You deserve to die,” after returning from the rescue mission to the Greenwood, Missouri, police station. Zicarelli had walked into the police station in December 2018 and said he had tried to drown his 6-month-old daughter in a nearby pond, police said.

Hallgrimson and another officer rushed to the pond and found the unconscious infant floating face up and her lungs filled with water. Hallgrimson and the other officer worked to warm and revive the baby until paramedics arrived and rushed her to a hospital, where she was treated for severe hypothermia.

Hallgrimson was put on administrative leave shortly after being accused of assaulting Zicarelli, which prosecutors say was captured on video. He resigned in May 2019.

Chief,

We get it man!

Nobody in the world would have batted an eye if you claimed that PTSD had finally gotten the better of you after seeing what you did.

Should have taken a medical and gone for the psych retirement. Charges would have almost certainly been reduced to misdemeanor and everything (for the most part) would be right with the universe.

A Missouri man who tried to down his infant daughter in a frigid pond near Kansas City has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for child abuse.
It was a week before Christmas Eve in 2018 when Jonathan Zicarelli walked into the Greenwood police station saying he'd just drowned his daughter in a nearby pond. Officers rushed to the area where they found the girl floating face-up in the water.

Police believed the child had been in the water for 10 minutes. Her body temperature was 87.9 degrees when she arrived at the hospital.
According to court documents, Zicarelli said he decided to drown his daughter because he was trying to make things easier on his wife and was stressed out due to the holidays and trying to provide for the family.

Zicarelli told officers he drove by the pond, parked his car, then walked down to the water three times trying to determine if he would kill the child. He ultimately placed the baby in the water and watched her sink before driving to the police station to confess his actions.
