A woman is in a 'grave condition' after a brown bear tore her off her arm and then ate it during a Christmas party at a Russian guest house.

The angry beast grabbed her outstretched hand as she fed the wild animal through the bars of its cramped cage.

The unnamed 53-year-old woman is now in intensive care following the attack in the Russian city of Achinsk.

She suffered huge blood loss and underwent emergency surgery on the stump of her arm.

The bear wrenched off her arm during a Christmas party at Aidashki guest house in Krasnoyarsk region.

The wild animal is kept caged as entertainment for visitors to a guest house - where it cannot hibernate in winter or roam free.

Its victim was an employee of the small hotel who had been drinking at a Christmas party when she boasted to other guests how she could feed the beast.

'It ended in tragedy for the woman as the bear took its revenge on being held captive - and ate her arm for its festive meal,' said a local.

Normally bears are shot after attacking humans - but this beast may get a reprieve.

State hunting inspector Vasily Vershkov denied local fears that the attacking bear or the hotel's other caged bear would be shot dead.

'We will wait until spring and assist in the release of these bears,' he said.

'Nobody will kill them.'

The saddest thing I ever saw was a caged bear in a roadside exhibit in South Carolina. He just sat there and rocked back and forth, people were leaning over the barrier, throwing stuff down and he never even looked up. I couldn't stand that so we left.

That was back in the 80's I hope he got away in the end.

Although I'm glad he wasn't shot, I don't know that releasing a bear with no fear of humans, a taste for blood, and no survival skills (I'm assuming this last one) is the best idea for anyone.

I know how shitty I get if I'm tired and haven't gotten enough sleep. Can't even imagine how much worse it'd be to need to actually HIBERNATE and not be able to.

I don't know enough about bears to really know of they're physically OK not doing this as long as they're being fed properly... But seems like it's unwise to go against the animal's instincts like that.

haha nah, he prob died prematurely, miserable and in anguish, having never experienced contentment or comfort again.

Hope the woman dies, not cuz of any impassioned belief that the people had it coming due to the mistreatment of the bear, but because shes russian, and all russians deserve to die

Bears don't actually HAVE to hibernate, they do so because it's cold and food is scarce. So if warm and fed, they will be happy little beasties.

On a side note, this probably has to be one of the most Russian stories I have read in awhile.

The "party" aspect isnt very Russian. Russians are joyless scumbag subhumans, very rare to hear about them having fun let alone outright partying, unless it's in celebration of the authoritarian govt or celebration of harming an innocent human being.

They don't even need to be warm or fed! Brown bears don't actually sleep through the entire winter, even if out in the cold and snow. They wake multiple times to go forge for food and do other things, like have babies. They hibernate because during those months their food sources are scarce and "sleeping" keeps them from burning too many calories and keeps their body temperatures up, but it's not a constant sleep, nor a deep sleep. They are easily awakened. People like to think of it as the bear zonking out for 6 months but they can be fully awake and still be hibernating. Kind of like how snakes hibernate.
