Sunbathing Woman Ran Over By Police Patrol Pickup Truck

A Louisiana police pickup truck ran over a woman sunbathing on a beach Thursday afternoon, shattering her pelvis and causing internal bleeding.

Assistant Grand Isle Police Chief Norris Esponge Jr. didn’t see 24-year-old Lindsey Gordon and her friend after he circled the beach on the Gulf of Mexico once without finding anyone there, officials with the Louisiana State Police told The Times-Picayune of New Orleans. The other woman managed to get out of the way and scream for Esponge to stop the Ford F-250.

Doctors at a New Orleans hospital are now performing multiple surgeries on Gordon, who lives in nearby Hammond, as they work to repair her pelvis and stop the internal bleeding, her family said. The state police are investigating, and Esponge has been placed on administrative leave, WVUE-TV reported.

How do you not see two sunbathers? Also how does one of those sunbathers not notice a truck approaching, even if only by the sound, especially when her friend had just jumped out of the way? Fast asleep maybe?

Sounds like this was a deserted stretch of beach. You'd think if it was a busy beach the driver would be exercising extra caution. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking.
