The California State Legislature approved a similar measure in 2017, but Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed it, questioning whether it was constitutional. Democrats just purged white party staffers, and it's a bigger deal than anyone wants to admit
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the House Democrats’ powerful campaign arm, has just abruptly purged half a dozen staffers. Why? Because they are white.

It appears that no one had anything against these particular staffers ... except for the color of their skin. Although roughly half the committee’s full-time staff (13 of 27) were nonwhite, this was not enough for some Democratic members of Congress. They complained DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos of Illinois had brought in too many white staffers when she won the position. And they put enough pressure on her that she sacrificed her loyal staffers to the god of diversity.

Even if all these staffers ended up with cushy lobbying jobs as a reward for their loyalty, this is still a lot more shocking than people perhaps realize.

There are two possible interpretations of this mass-purge at the DCCC. Either a few Democrats are making a racial issue out of a patronage question, once again knifing each other under the cover of intersectionality, or Democrats are genuinely angry that half the staff at the DCCC are white. As often happens with the Democratic Left, it is difficult to tell just where the insincerity ends and the fanaticism begins.

Pelosi calls Kushner a 'slumlord' in defense of Cummings

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Jared Kushner a "slumlord" on Thursday as she defended Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings and his Baltimore-area district following days of attacks from President Trump.

Pelosi, a Baltimore native whose father and brother served as mayor of the city, said Trump should consult with Kushner after he belittled the majority-black district in a multiday Twitter barrage.

Kushner's family owns apartments buildings and other property in the Baltimore area and has been criticized for the kinds of despair and neglect Trump accused Cummings and local leaders of ignoring.

"The president -- this comes as no surprise -- really doesn't know what he's talking about, " Pelosi told reporters. "But maybe you could ask his son-in-law, who's a slumlord there, if he wants to talk about rodent infestations."

In an interview with The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr. said the county had to threaten Kushner's firm to get it to address code violations and other issues at some of its properties.

Kushner stepped down as CEO when he joined the Trump administration in 2017.

Trump attacked Cummings, a 13-term congressman who chairs the House Oversight and Reform Committee, over several days, dubbing him racist and saying his Baltimore district is in worse shape than the southern border with Mexico.

The president described it as a "disgusting rat and rodent-infested mess." He was roundly condemned by Democrats for his comments.

The verbal attacks came after the committee authorized subpoenas for the communications of White House officials, including Kushner, over private emails accounts and messaging apps.

The Democrat-led House earlier this month passed a resolution condemning Trump for comments, deemed racist by some, that were directed at four congresswomen of color.

The House GOP has been smacked by a wave of retirements over the past few weeks — but some Republicans fear the worst is yet to come.

With the GOP relegated to the minority for the first time in eight years, a mix of veteran and vulnerable members have decided to call it quits instead of sticking around to see whether the party wins back power in 2020.

Over the past two weeks alone, five Republicans — including a member of the Republican leadership team — said they would not seek reelection. And that comes after Rep. Susan Brooks of Indiana, who leads recruitment efforts for the House GOP’s campaign arm and is one of the few Republican women left in the House, shocked her colleagues by announcing her retirement earlier this summer.

“Will there be more retirements? Most certainly there will be, for a range of reasons,” said Rep. Paul Mitchell (R-Mich.), who announced his own retirement last week.

Most of the seats being vacated thus far are in ruby-red districts, which Republicans will have no problems keeping. But at least two of the races have become more competitive in the wake of the retirement announcements, and more vulnerable members could jump ship if they don’t want to duke it out another term — especially if they are pessimistic about the GOP’s prospects in 2020.

“I believe there will be more to come,” said Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. “Being in the minority weighs on members’ decision-making. … It is a new reality for many.”

Now, with members back home with their families and constituents for the long August recess, Capitol Hill is buzzing about who will be the next lawmaker to hang up their voting card.
