The child was taken on an ambulance to a nearby hospital, where it was learned that the child had severe, potentially life-threatening injuries. According to medical personnel, the injuries were consistent with abuse.

Police identified 26-year-old Christian Angel Cookmeyer as the person caring for the child when the injuries occurred. Through the investigation, they recovered a felony amount of an illegal, controlled substance. They also learned Cookmeyer was caring for a 4-year-old child immediately in the vicinity of the controlled substance.

A Louisiana man’s felony child abuse charge has been upgraded to capital murder after a four-month-old child died from the injuries they suffered earlier this month.

Just before 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, Biloxi police responded to a hotel room on Beach Boulevard in reference to an unresponsive child. The four-month-old child was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.

Medical personnel determined that the child’s injuries were consistent with abuse. Investigators identified Christian Angel Cookmeyer, 26, as the person caring for the child when the injuries allegedly happened.

Christian Angel Cookmeyer pleaded guilty on December 18 to second-degree murder, felony child endangerment, and possession of a controlled substance.
The baby had been left in the care of Cookmeyer, the baby’s mother’s then-boyfriend, while the mother went to work. When the mother returned, she discovered her daughter was limp, not breathing normally, and called 911.

“The 4-month-old was transported to Merit Health in Biloxi, where she was diagnosed with multiple skull fractures and brain bleeds. The ER doctor at Merit Health noted that the child’s injuries were ‘highly suspicious for non-accidental trauma’ and indicated child abuse,” said Assistant District Attorney Mara Joffe, who prosecuted the case on behalf of the state.
The baby was transported to Children’s Hospital New Orleans, where she passed away.

According to authorities, Cookmeyer first said the hotel’s housekeeper could have hurt the baby. Officers said he then told them the baby had fallen off the bed, and at one point even shifted blame to his 4-year-old daughter, who was also staying in the hotel room, saying his daughter must have dropped the baby while he was in the bathroom.
Cookmeyer was sentenced to 30 years for second-degree murder, 10 years for felony child endangerment, and 10 years for possession of a controlled substance.
