An 11-year-old boy who was forced by his father and stepmother to live inside a barrel where he ate his own feces was rescued by authorities in the southern Brazilian city of Campinas.

The São Paulo Military Police said the cops were responding to an anonymous report on Saturday.

Video shows the moment law enforcement agents entered and found the malnourished, naked child chained inside the small metal container that was stored away in a corner of the balcony.

Brazilian news outlet Acidade On reported that the boy had been living inside the metal container for almost a month and that it was covered in feces and urine.

He allegedly was only fed meals of banana peels and cornmeal and was forced to eat his own feces to survive, police said.

The boy's father, stepmother and his 22-year-old stepsister, who reportedly played a role in abusing him, were placed under arrest. Their identities were not released.

The 39-year-old stepmother was known in the neighborhood for rescuing abandoned dogs and providing them shelter at her home.

According to the police report, the father and the stepmother said that they had chained the boy to the barrel because he suffered from a psychiatric problem and 'gave them a lot of work.'

The father initially denied he was the boy's biological father before he confessed he was and claimed the child's mother had abandoned them.

The boy weighed only 59 pounds at the time of his rescue and was rushed to Ouro Verde Municipal Hospital, where he remains hospitalized pending a full examination.

Residents told authorities that the boy had been abused by his family for several years.

According to the state child services agency, the family had been under watch for a year.

It just amazes me how many of these stories have people quoted saying the family abused the child for years.. Yet nothing happened to help. And the family was under investigation by CPS? How did they miss the poor kid who was skin and bones in a barrel?!

The court sentenced, to eight years in prison in a closed regime, the trio accused of keeping an 11-year-old boy chained inside a barrel, in Campinas (SP). The case, which had national repercussions, came to light on January 30, 2021, when military police officers found the child arrested and with his hands and feet chained. It is appealed by the boy's father, stepmother and her daughter.

According to the ruling, the defendants, who have been imprisoned since the day the boy was found, were convicted of torture, with no right to respond in freedom. In addition, the boy's father also received a conviction for intellectual abandonment, which resulted in another 15 days of detention, however, in the open regime.

Police officers who found the victim reported that he was fed fruit peels. The boy was naked, inside a closed metal drum with a tile and a marble sink to prevent him from leaving. The video from the moment he is found shows that the child could barely move when he was found. He had his waist, feet and hands chained.

The boy had been without food for almost five days, police say. "They put on him banana peel, raw cornmeal," reports Corporal Rodrigo Carlos da Silva. Civil Police believe he had been chained inside the barrel for a month when it was taken out by military police officers. "From the beginning of January I was already being arrested in the drum. He would have to stand on this mooring, which was done with his arms stuck on top of the drum," reported Deputy Daniel Vida da Silva.

After leaving the house, the boy was rescued to the Ouro Verde Hospital and later transferred to the Mário Gatti Hospital, under the tutelage of his aunt. After being discharged, he was taken to a foster home. The g1 failed to confirm whether the boy remains in the same institution.

The father said the boy was aggressive and would run away - he did it to educate the boy.

Surely he wants to run away when they mistreat him all the time. Look at his feet, they are awfully swollen from the continuous standing. This hurts a lot. The victim blaming on the father's side is callous and unbearable. I dearly hope they didn't succeed to destroy this poor child, IMO the worst in child abuse is the perpetrators try to convince themselves and the victim that he did deserve the mistreatment. As soon as the child believes that, he is lost, being too destroyed to be able to live or becoming an abuser himself later.
