A man and woman are in jail after a 6-year-old boy was found with his hands tied behind his back inside a shed in Dallas.

Police found the child behind the home on Coston Drive around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night.

When they asked the boy’s grandmother where he was, she told officers he was with his mother. But when they walked toward the back of the house, they found a man living in the back of the property who pointed them toward the shed.

Officers told the grandmother to open the shed or they would break down the door. She opened it and police found the boy.

His grandmother said he was only in there that one time as punishment. But her boyfriend (who lives in the house) said for at least two weeks, confinement in the shed was the child’s punishment since he was stealing food.

The boy told officers the alleged abuse started since he “got out of school for this corona thing.”

DALLAS (KTVT/CNN) - The grandmother of a 6-year-old boy and her boyfriend face felony charges after Dallas police found the child confined inside a shed.

Police responded to 53-year-old grandmother Esmeralda Lira’s home late Sunday night after receiving a tip.

Lira told them the 6-year-old was with his mother, but a man living in the back of the property pointed them toward the shed, where officers found the boy with his hands tied behind his back.

Lira said it was the first time the victim had been confined in the shed, but her live-in boyfriend, 64-year-old Jose Balderas, accused him of stealing food and said he had been punished for at least two weeks.

The 6-year-old told officers he had been forced to sleep in the shed, and the alleged abuse started around the time he “got out of school for this corona thing.”

Lira and Balderas face felony charges for endangering a child.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services confirms it is investigating. The 6-year-old boy, his 7-year-old sister and 4-year-old brother have been removed from the home and will be placed in foster care.

School really was a safe haven for many children.

Grandma was probably always abusive but the child probably thought it was normal.
You are so right. Not only a safe haven from neglect or abuse, but a place they were seen and mattered. I know that all teachers aren’t great and a few are just awful, but the majority (myself included hehe) truly love children and offer kids hope that Life doesn’t have to be miserable.

During an interview, the boy told investigators that it was not the first time he had been locked in the shed. He was regularly locked inside the shed at night and when Lira would leave the house, the warrants say.

Lira would also allegedly tie up his wrists and tell him "he is bad," as well as kick him and grab him by the ears, according to the affidavits.

The boy told investigators he was not allowed to go in the house and was given a plastic bag to use when he needed to go to the bathroom. There were rats and insects inside the shed, which was filled with items from the floor to the ceiling when the officers found the boy, the court documents say.

Balderas told investigators the boy was locked in the shed for at least two weeks. While he knew what Lira was doing, he said he "did not want to be a part of the situation," the warrants state.

CPS officials said all three children have been placed in foster care as of Monday.

Lira and Balderas have both been booked into the Dallas County jail. Bail has been set at $100,000 for both people, but they each have immigration holds. Balderas also has three outstanding warrants against him from Dallas police.

If she was receiving some sort of assistance for the children, she is the one “stealing “ food from the children! Why would she keep them if she was just going to be hateful? 6 year old children don’t “steal” food! I hope the children find a nice home with someone who will love and care for them.
