The Trump administration is facing growing complaints from migrants about severe overcrowding, meager food and other hardships at border holding centers, with some people at an encampment in El Paso being forced to sleep on the bare ground during dust storms.

The Border Network for Human Rights issued a report Friday based on dozens of testimonials of immigrants over the past month and a half, providing a snapshot of cramped conditions and prolonged stays in detention amid a record surge of migrant families coming into the U.S. from Central America.

The report comes a day after an advocate described finding a teenage mother cradling a premature baby inside a Border Patrol processing center in Texas. The advocate said the baby should have been in a hospital, not a facility where adults are kept in large fenced-in sections that critics describe as cages.

"The state of human rights in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands is grave and is only getting worse," the immigrant rights group said in its report. "People are dying because of what is happening."

Five immigrant children have died since late last year after being detained by the Border Patrol, including a flu-stricken teenager who was found dead in a facility migrants refer to as the "icebox" because of the temperatures inside.

Many of the complaints center on El Paso, where the inspector general found severe overcrowding inside a processing center. A cell designed for a dozen people was crammed with 76, and migrants had to stand on the toilets.

With indoor facilities overcrowded, the Border Patrol has kept some immigrants outside and in tents near a bridge in El Paso with nothing but a Mylar foil blanket. Others have been kept in an empty parking lot, where migrants huddled underneath tarps and foil blankets repurposed as shade covers against the sweltering heat.

A professor who visited two weeks ago said it resembled a "human dog pound." The Border Patrol responded by adding additional shade structures, but migrants are still kept outside in temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

Migrants in El Paso and elsewhere also complained of inadequate food such as a single burrito and a cup of water per day. Women said they were denied feminine hygiene products.

Another complaint is that migrants are kept in detention beyond the 72-hour limit set by Customs and Border Protection. Some reported being held for 30 days or more, and one told The Associated Press she had been in detention for around 45 days.

An exodus of people fleeing poverty, drought and violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador has led to a record number of migrant families being apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent months. Agents made 132,887 apprehensions in May, including a record 84,542 adults and children traveling together. Those apprehended also included 11,507 children traveling alone.

President Donald Trump's $4.5 billion border request for things such as an expansion of detention, medical care, food and shelter has languished on Capitol Hill since he sent it over six weeks ago, with House Democrats at odds with the White House. Congress is set to go on a break in two weeks.

I lived in El Paso and fought to even have a damn job because I wasn’t fluent in Spanish... and a military wife... beyond the scams that are pulled everyday... I say this with the upmost respect BUT UNTIL we can house - feed - and medical EVERY damn AMERICAN - I have NO DESIRE for my hard earned money feeding caring for educating and allowing people to bitch about not having what they already DONT FUCKING HAVE... I am not prejudice in anyway... mixed in race actually... but if you cannot provide for your own ... why feed other mouths... that’s fucking suicide

@Knox

But are these people not the cause of "these concentration camps" with their bum rushing the border?

What if they are carrying diseases?

How do they benefit this country when they did not fight to make their home countries better to come here and use resources that they have not paid into?

My attitude with most things is if you are taking and not giving anything back you should just shut up and be greatful for what you are being given.

Nope. Not their fault. They are asylum seekers, fleeing horrors none of us can understand. I don't care about being a 'citizen'. Humans are humans and all are worthy of help no matter where they were born. And they don't use resources that they haven't paid into. Everyone needs to do actual research on that. I know it's a great bullet point but it's a false one.

Again not offense.. most are disease ridden out of ignorance (uneducated) and if they do know they have something .. they give no fucks about spreading ESPECIALLY tuberculosis! We in America give free medical and have a pill for everything!

So how many do we take all of them?

Most are economic migrants and the reality is they are a burden to our health care, educational and legal systems.

How are they paying to educate their children when they just came over the border the same with their children's' medical care?

And I'm sorry but we're gonna have to agree to disagree. I do not believe they are disease ridden. Maybe a few, but we already have those people here too. They are people with children and babies. They are worthy of our care.

May I ask what kind of antibiotic costs 1500.00???? I pay cash for my perscriptions and I'm allergic to almost every known antibiotic in the world so some of mine are pricey, like 50 bucks, but I have never heard of one anywhere near that high.

Feds to warn immigrants about welfare use
Under Clinton-era rules, the government only looks at a narrow set of welfare programs when determining if an immigrant has become a public charge. The Trump plan, still a work in progress, would add food stamps, public housing and long-term institutionalized care to the list.

That plan would save the government nearly $20 billion over a decade, the government argued in its draft proposal.

So how many do we take all of them?

And this is $100 billion dollar question. So what say you, lefties? How many is enough? Enough that the USA turns into the same 3rd world shit that these people are leaving?

Refusing to differentiate between genuine refugees and economic migrants amounts to an open border policy. An open border policy will destroy your country.

Still waiting for someone to point to a country anywhere on Earth were mass 3rd world migration has had any benefit for the host country and it's native inhabitants.

Just name one. You can't can you?

As most of comments indicate, the real problem is we’re all fighting for scraps at the bottom— I think that’s why most Trump supporters are anti-immigrant (and maybe a tiny bit of racism).

Most Western countries have zero birth rate, which means their programs similar to social security & Medicare are becoming increasingly expensive for current workers to support as their population ages. The US benefits from immigration: more workers to support the elderly, disabled, military etc by paying taxes.

However, income inequality is real: the "richest 1 percent in the United States now own more additional income than the bottom 90 percent". Capitalism has brought millions out of poverty but unchecked, it can be destructive. Having the super rich to pay higher taxes is the way you harness capitalism for the benefit of all. It’s a delicate balance and right now, it’s not working for workers— that’s why ordinary Americans feel like illegal immigrants will take away the few benefits they already have.

Just my opinion.

When we can take care of the needs of the people we already have here then and only then should we help others

People are people. Children are children. I don't care which piece of dirt they were born on. We are not better than anyone else.

Public education-

Food stamps and w.I.c for their children

Emergency room

Whether you want to call it welfare it is not free and as much as you want to believe the bodega purchases are keeping the economy floating they are not.

If you're undocumented you get none of those. Research is your best friend.

It's tragic. I feel bad for the families having to live in those conditions but I don't see how America or Canada even, should be expected to ignore people illegally crossing the border and then just allow them to slip away into the crowd. We don't even allow that in our night clubs for reasons pertaining to safety/crowd control/desired population.

A lot of those swanky lefties wouldn't want them in their night club. I know that. They don't even let me in half the time. No shirt, no shoes... what about no papers?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the crime. No, I don't think most of these people aspire to be Tony Montana, but many will unfortunately be "forced" to go down that route with severely limited options having entered illegally.

Well we seem to be doing pretty well after taking over the America's. It was all third world over here until we came along. Maybe we should start mass immigrating to the Middle East now. Then we'll take Africa! Who would have thought that we've been doing it backwards all this time?

The children who are brought here illegally and allowed to be released into the community are most definitely

enrolled in public schools and are eligible for free lunch.

It is possible in your state they can not apply for food stamps but they can in New York.

No one where I live (White Plains, NY) is turned away from emergency rooms, food banks or homeless shelters.

The children that are unaccompanied that come to New York are placed with relatives who receive assistance to feed and cloth them through tax payer dollars.

For the record I have no problem with the children and the women but I do have a problem with grown men who are unwilling to fight to keep their families safe and will come over the border and leave those same women and children behind.

Women and children should be given top priority and the men should be sent back to their countries.

Yp
Your so riled up, this is getting worse than the political thread, can’t wait for your buddies to join in:D;)

Dude, y'all right wing bigots don't bother me. Except for general terms of you all suck at being human. I'm not at all riled up. I'm bored at work and it's the only reason I'm bothering with you. You're all going to think and feel the way you want to and I'll think and feel the way I want to. Nothing will change except the world will continue to grow meaner. What evs.

Who are you lumping into your group of bigots?

I don't think wanting our homeless population taken care of which includes elderly, disabled and veterans, is being a bigot. Veterans that have fought for our safety and our freedom. Don't these people mean anything to you.

You want to throw your position of being mod around handing out warnings for things you think are a giant no no.

Maybe you better take a look at yourself. Name calling is so childish.

Edit to add @Knox
