An Alabaster man was arrested Wednesday after Alabaster police responded to a Birmingham hospital earlier this month on child abuse reports.
23-year-old Aaron Ward was booked into the Shelby County Jail Wednesday for aggravated child abuse.
Rigney said the investigation began February 13 after officers responded to Children's Hospital on reports of an infant being abused.
Court records show Ward picked the baby up by her ankles and "snatched" her toward his chest, hitting her head on the corner of the crib. The baby is recovering from 20 rib fractures, a fractured tibia and fibula, both femurs fractured and extensive head trauma causing a right parietal fracture and a left side hematoma.
Detectives told WVTM 13 the baby's injuries could be life-threatening and she remains in critical condition at this time.
Ward is in jail on $120,000 bond.
