A malnourished toddler raised by vegan parents had no medical records after her birth and neighbours didn't even know she existed.

The girls mother and father, aged 32 and 34, pleaded guilty to causing the toddler serious injury and will be sentenced in the Sydney District Court next month.

They fed the girl a diet so lacking in basic nutrients that she developed rickets, a degenerative bone disease caused by a lack of vital nutrients.

Her father told told Family and Community Services they 'did not want to put her through immunisations as (it was) hard on baby', according to the Daily Telegraph.

The girl had very little documentation and no medical records after she left hospital in 2016 after being born in 'good condition'.

This diet resulted in severe deficiencies in nutrients across the board for the infant, including a lack of calcium, phosphate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, iron and zinc.

Her levels of vitamin D - which can cause bone disease if found to be too low - were 'undetectable'.

The infant had fractures scattered throughout her tiny body and her bones were so brittle doctors believed they could have been broken by 'normal handling'.

The couple's 19-month-old daughter is now in foster care with her two older brothers, aged four and six, and are doing much better.

Within just six months, the girl put on six kilograms and is crawling and standing on her own.

But doctors said it was still 'imperative' she continue therapy and is constantly monitored to help manage developmental delays.

The parents pleaded guilty to failing to provide for a child and causing serious injury, charges of reckless grievous bodily harm were withdrawn.

19 months and the parents weren't at all concerned she couldn't even crawl or stand up. I don't think they could raise a gnat successfully.

It's not wrong to want to use different parenting and care methods, but, ffs, do your homework first! You've only got one chance, so try really, really hard not to fuck it up.

My best middle guy didn't walk until he was two ! He could crawl and climb and pull out a pot from under the cupboard which he would park between the kitchen and living room and then sit in, so he could watch barney and hang out with me all at the same time ... like he just didn't have to walk. And i didn't care. Then one day he crawled over to my boots, put them on and walked over to his pot, flipped it over and sat on top of it. True story !!!

NOTE: I have a normal sized kid, a skinny kid, and he was the fat one.

My second grandkid had a chromosome anomaly which included weak ankles, so she didn't walk until just days before her 2nd birthday. Of course, she was getting physical therapy and speech therapy. I don't know how people in these news stories can just ignore a child's suffering. There was a reason for my grand's problems and it worried me night and day. We worked very hard to augment the therapies that were provided for her. Due to this same problem, it had also been a tremendous struggle to get her weight to 20lbs by 1 yr. I have photos of her little bones sticking out, and it still makes me cry. I can't imagine just letting a child starve.

These parents think immunizations are painful but were okay with rickets?! Christ that’s not a disease you should get in a first world country— besides the poor diet, she must’ve gotten very little sunlight. There’s more going on here than just being vegan.

Veganism done right can be very healthy. I know vegans who have raised their kids as vegan since birth and their kids are thriving and healthy. The parents in this article are obviously abusive twats who likely would've found a way to screw up these kids through some other way even if they weren't vegan.

Interested in hearing more. I've never known a healthy vegan... what could my vegan acquaintances do better?

Not shit-talking you, genuinely interested.
My bestie is vegan and raises her son from birth as vegan. They are both very healthy, eat a varied diet with alternative non-soy protien sources.

They seem to have had 3 chances that they also fucked up.
here's my thing, while her brothers were also removed, apparently they were not obviously abused. I say this because it there were anymore shocking details to report the Daily Mail would have exploited every detail. There's some weird family dynamic here. Dad saying girls are different to boys to explain her size unintentionally gave me the willies. This sounds like one of those families where one child is selected for abuse/neglect.

On a side note, I do give the side eye to vegetarians and especially vegans. Too often I've met those who confuse their dietary choice with religion, and you will hear about it just as relentlessly.

How about waiting until your child can make an informed choice instead of shoving your beliefs down their throat literally from birth. I see no difference between this and the abusive religious nutters we read about on here. Just a way for parents to try and control every aspect of their kids life. And poorly at that.

What I hated when we tried veganism was paying extra for fake butter, fake milk, fake cheese, fake hotdogs, fake hamburgers, etc. If you are trying to get away from meat and meat products, then why feel that you have to eat fake? Just eat the damned vegetables as they are and stop trying to make them into something else.

My friend tried one of the new fake meat burgers last year. He said there wasn't much difference from the real thing.

The vegi stuff aside, I can't wait for lab grown meat. I generally avoid the real stuff because of the environmental costs but that stuff is going convert a lot of hard core vegans back to our omnivorous 'dark side' ;)

I love my meat, and I've eaten everything from goat to rattlesnake, but we do try to eat a vegetarian meal about twice a week. I can not abide and actually get violently sick every time I've tried the veggie hot dogs and hamburgers, there is a spice that I can taste and can not identify that is worst coming up than it is going down..
What we usually do is an Asian or Greek vegetable stir fry with rice or couscous on the side, or even a pot pie where we substitute mushrooms for the meat and I make a soy sauce based "gravy" to keep the vegetables in the pot pie moist.
I am not one who could ever go "vegan", as there are simply no decent cooking substitutes for dairy/eggs products when one is baking or making certain dishes, and I'm not giving up my filet mignon, seafood or even kosher hot dogs, damnit!

This right here, every last word!
"We won't immunized our child for whatever reason we can come up with, but we're quite satisfied that our 19 month old has rickets, a negative vitamin D level, multiple broken bones, as well as growth and dental issues that will continue to cause lifelong health problems for her.".
But, hey, at least she doesn't eat any meat, amirite?

Horrific. This may shock you to your core. Just a heads up.

A baby girl fed a vegan diet by her parents was so neglected that by the time she was 19 months old she didn't have any teeth and looked like she was just three months old, a Sydney court has heard.
[....]
The girl, who was taken to hospital after she suffered a seizure in March 2018, was fed a strict plant-based diet, which left her malnourished and suffering from a preventable bone disease.
[....]
The toddler's former foster carer, in a victim impact statement, said that, when she first met the little girl she couldn't sit up, roll over or hold her own bottle despite being almost two.

She had no teeth and couldn't speak.

The foster carer told the court she saw the toddler lying on a hospital bed connected to tubes.

"I remember thinking how terrifying this must be [for her]," she said.

The toddler continues to stand out as different because of her parents' crime, the carer said.

"When she meets new people socially they always ask her age and are shocked how small she is."

The preschooler, now almost three, is technically obese because her height - that of a one-year-old - is so disproportionate to her weight.

"It's like her body is storing calories in case she needs them in the future," the carer said.

After leaving hospital, the little girl had to attend an appointment every single day with a medical professional. She also needed to have her blood tested at least once a month.

"As she gets older she is becoming more traumatised by [the blood tests]," the carer said.
"She now begins to scream."

Absolutely no one in the case is being named. Parents were, of course, arrested and have plead guilty to failing to provide. I don't know if that's an actual charge or not. They should get a life sentence considering the severity of the child's condition. Video at the link.

An Australian couple, who fed their baby daughter a strict vegan diet have avoided jail time, according to CNN affiliate Seven News.

The mother and father, who are both in their 30s and who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to failing to provide necessities in life and causing injury to the child. The couple were sentenced a 18-month jail term to be served as a community order.

Authorities discovered the couple’s child so malnourished that at 19-months she weighed just 4.9 kilograms (10.8 pounds). Her bones had not developed since birth. Her development was so stunted she didn’t even have any teeth, Seven News reported.

Her parents said they had kept the girl on a strict vegan diet. She also hasn’t been vaccinated and hadn’t received any medical care since birth, reported CNN affiliate Nine News.

Judge Sarah Huggett, called the child’s vegan diet “completely inadequate” — was only fed oats, bananas, peanut butter jelly sandwiches and rice.

“Neither offender was particularly young, immature, uneducated or inexperienced as a parent or caregiver to young children.”

However, Hugget also said she believed the crime was committed out of recklessness rather than malice, and that the mother may have been dealing with a depressive mental illness at the time, Nine News reported.

On top of the community service, the parents must now complete parenting and nutrition programs.

The little girl, now aged three, has been placed under the care of a relative, and has reportedly made progress in her development. She has since been vaccinated, and is undergoing speech therapy and physiotherapy.

committed out of recklessness rather than malice
She wouldn't have had a vitamin D deficiency if they'd taken her outside. They didnt even need to feed her to get an adequate supply of that. This is the very definition of malice because in the legal world(including AU!) the definition for malice doesn't imply willfully doing harm like it does for us regular people.. it is simply "wrongful intention".

The Australian man and woman, 35 and 33, were charged after their daughter had a seizure and was admitted to Sydney Children's Hospital in March last year.

According to ABC News, for the first 19 months of her life the child was fed a "conservative vegan diet", suffered from rickets - a condition that affects bone development in children - and missed key developmental milestones, the judge said.

The parents, who have two other children, fed their baby oats with olive oil, rice milk, vegetables, rice, potatoes and tofu.

As a snack they would give her a mouthful of fruit or two sultanas.

Medical examinations revealed she had several severe deficiencies as well as osteopenia - thinning of the bones.

Doctors said her bones had not developed since birth.
