Police and EMS responded around 3:15 a.m. on March 26 to the Waffle House in Gretna on a report of a woman who gave birth in a nearby portable toilet.
At the scene, 37-year-old Lekesha Lemelle allegedly told officers that she had given birth but could not recall exactly when or share the baby’s condition, WVUE reported, citing authorities. Officers then checked a porta-potty in a nearby shopping center, where they found a dead baby at the bottom of the tank.
An autopsy later conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office determined that the baby’s cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning, NOLA.com reported.
Gretna Police Deputy Chief Jason DiMarco noted that the “baby was alive at birth” and said authorities believe Lemelle is houseless, per NOLA.com.
Lemelle was hospitalized following the incident. DiMarco told the news outlet she will be arrested on the murder charge once she is released.
