Police and EMS responded around 3:15 a.m. on March 26 to the Waffle House in Gretna on a report of a woman who gave birth in a nearby portable toilet.
At the scene, 37-year-old Lekesha Lemelle allegedly told officers that she had given birth but could not recall exactly when or share the baby’s condition, WVUE reported, citing authorities. Officers then checked a porta-potty in a nearby shopping center, where they found a dead baby at the bottom of the tank.
An autopsy later conducted by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office determined that the baby’s cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning, NOLA.com reported.

Gretna Police Deputy Chief Jason DiMarco noted that the “baby was alive at birth” and said authorities believe Lemelle is houseless, per NOLA.com.

Lemelle was hospitalized following the incident. DiMarco told the news outlet she will be arrested on the murder charge once she is released.

she might be houseless but her baby didn't have to be houseless also that is why they have safe havens everywhere... even if she didn't have even a towel to wrap her baby up to keep it warm heck just put the baby on against your skin making sure it could breath and your body heat and clothing will keep the baby nice and warm till you can get help for your baby and yourself ... if you don't have a phone well anyone you can get to help even if you have to show them your baby or they hear him/her cry will call for help for you both and just leave your baby at the hospital no questions asked.. you just don't drop your live baby (or dead ones) to drown in the toilet or toss them in garbage bags grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
