A 2-year-old died at a home in west Denver Sunday night and now a man is in custody, facing multiple charges related to that child's death.

Denver police say they responded after receiving a call about an unresponsive 2-year-old. The child was pronounced dead at the scene and officers took 38-year-old Nicholas Stout into custody.
He was being held for investigation of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death, DPD said.

The 2-year-old was not identified and a DPD spokesperson said they didn't know if the child and Stout were related.

According to arrest paperwork, Stout was the boyfriend of the child's mother. Police interviewed several roommates at the home. All of them reportedly described Stout as "short fused," "hot headed" and "very aggressive."

Stout and the child's mother initially told officers the girl had been jumping on a bed the previous day and fell, hitting her head. Later, the mother told investigators she saw Stout slap the child twice that night. She said the girl cried briefly, fell asleep and did not wake up the next morning.
Investigators documented bruising across the child's body -- some in various stages of healing -- along with a raised bump on her forehead and other injuries. Police also found several bloody towels and wipes in the trash, as well as a bloody handprint. Stout told officers the blood came from trying to clean a bloody lip the child got after falling off the bed.
A review of his criminal record shows prior cases including kidnapping and burglary. Denver police records also show multiple calls for service to the home over the past year for issues including weapons and theft.

The mother of a 2-year-old girl who died in Denver over the weekend has been arrested and now faces charges of child abuse resulting in death. Her arrest comes days after a man identified in court records as her boyfriend was arrested on the same charge, as well as first-degree murder.
Late Tuesday night, DPD said officers arrested the baby's mother, 38-year-old Melissa Wayne.

Court documents obtained by Denver ABC affiliate KMGH identified the victim as Valkyrie Erickson and provided additional details about the circumstances of her death.
In an interview with investigators, Stout reportedly tried to lay blame at Valkyrie's feet, claiming that the child was a "dare devil" whose fatal wounds were self-inflicted.
"Nicholas [Stout] described Valkyrie as a 'dare devil' and stated that she liked to jump around on the bed," police reportedly wrote in a probable cause affidavit. "During the time that they were trying to sleep on Friday night, Valkyrie started to jump over Melissa [Wayne], then over Nicholas [Stout] and was about to jump off of the bed. Nicholas [Stout] said that he put his arm over to catch Valkyrie and stop her from jumping off of the bed. In the process of grabbing her, she hit her head on the night stand/coffee table that was next to his bed."
Stout also claimed that he was out getting cigarettes at about midnight the evening before Valkyrie was found unresponsive.
However, interviews with witnesses, including at least one individual who lived in the house with the family, belied Stout's claims.

The housemate, who had been living at the residence for about a week, reportedly told police he "frequently" heard Stout yelling at Valkyrie, which was often followed by "slapping noises coming from the bedroom" where Stout stayed with Valkyrie and her mother.
"[The housemate] stated that between the hours of 11 p.m. – 1 a.m., on January 17, 2026, that he heard the yelling and screaming continue," the affidavit states. "[The housemate] heard [Stout] say something to the effect of 'You f—ing bit me' and 'I f—ing hate you.' [The housemate] stated that it was a close proximity in time after those statements that 'the baby' stopped crying and everything went quiet for the rest of the night."
Police said that every individual in the house "would normally avoid" Stout "because of his temper." A summary of how others described Stout included the following: "Short fused," "hot headed," "unhinged," "unpredictable," "goes off the wall," and "very aggressive," according to a report from Denver NBC affiliate KUSA.

I wish every cockroach living in that house could be charged with Valkyrie's murder.

Valkyrie Eden Erickson, affectionately known as “Sweet Pea,” “Tiny,” “Blue,” “Princess,” and “Val,” passed away on January 18, 2026, at the age of two.
During her short but meaningful life, Valkyrie was known for her joyful spirit and bright smile. She enjoyed playing in water, looking at books with her father, and imaginative play — especially pretending to cook. She found comfort in her favorite blanket and her pasi, and she loved to cuddle with those she trusted.

Her name was chosen with intention: Valkyrie, inspired by the Norse warrior maidens, representing strength; and Eden, reflecting innocence and purity. She embodied both.

All I need is 10 minutes and a pine box for the remains... :rage:
well i can build a pine box but i am not great at measurments (when i choose now to be like right now lol) so box might be too small so solution would be to chop off some parts while alive till remainder is small enough to fit in after your 10 minutes are up ... will that help???

Too bad she wasn’t as intentional about the people she allowed access to her daughter, she allowed a “short tempered” angry, violent, male to assault her baby!! He then murdered her !
