Accused child molester killed wife who suffered from Alzheimer's disease

Harvey Theodore Kneifl, 72, was charged Friday in Washington County District Court with the 2nd-degree intentional murder of his wife.

According to a criminal complaint, Kneifl was scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and when he failed to arrive, authorities found him at his senior's apartment at Saint Therese of Woodbury, at 7555 Bailey Road.

Police entered after multiple calls and knocks on the door went unanswered, and once inside they found Kneifl in the shower bleeding from a knife wound to his neck.

A nurse at the senior living center provided medical help for Kneifl, who told police that they would find his wife in a second bathroom.

She was found with what police described as a fatal "deep laceration" on the left side of her neck.

After being treated at a local hospital, Kneifl told an investigating officer that his wife had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease and he "had helped his wife out last night."

Kneifl admitted to watching the 10 o'clock news with his wife, afterward helping her to the bathroom and telling her he'd help her get to heaven. He took one of two knives he'd placed in a linen closet, cut her throat and put her in the bathtub, the criminal complaint states.

He told police that it took 20 minutes for her to die.

The complaint says Kneifl then went into the other bathroom and cut his neck with the same knife and laid down in the shower. He fell asleep only to wake up when police arrived the next morning.

Kneifl is a former school bus aide in the South Washington County School District and is on trial for numerous counts of criminal sexual conduct against minors.

Kneifl, 72, said Julie A. Kneifl, 72, had Parkinson’s disease, which caused her to have dementia. “She was living the life of, basically, a vegetable,” he said during a hearing in Washington County District Court in Stillwater. “She was in constant pain, constant suffering. I decided to help her move on to the next life where she would no longer have any pain or suffering.”
