A woman was charged with capital murder in connection with the death of her cousin's 6-year-old daughter in Harris County.
Nakia N. Martin, 39, is accused of drowning the child in a bathtub at a home on Courtland Circle in the Klein area. Siblings who survived the incident said Martin was trying to baptize them.
According to court documents, the drowning happened on Sept. 8, 2023. The investigation began the next day.
Martin was babysitting while her cousin was in Indiana, according to court documents.
She told the deputy she was bathing with the girl and two other children. The two children reportedly told investigators that "something happened. The devil" while they were taking a bath. The kids also said Martin put "blessing oil" on their necks, according to court documents.
The girl's mother told investigators that one of her other daughters told her that Martin was trying to baptize them and she saw them all in the bathtub during a FaceTime call on the night of Sept. 8.
When interviewed by investigators, Martin said she "didn't mean to kill this baby" and also said she dressed the girl after removing her from the tub, court documents said.
During an interview with investigators months after the incident, one of the other children told investigators that Martin held the child who died underwater in a bathtub and tried to drown her. She said Martin held her underwater even though the child was struggling to get air. The child also said Martin told her to keep what happened a secret and threatened her with "hell."
