The Lubbock Police Department is investigating the injury and death of a 5-month-old.

On May 8, the injured infant was brought to the emergency room at Covenant Children’s. Hospital staff suspected the child may have been abused and called Lubbock police to investigate.
Police interviewed three people who had been around the child: 22-year-old Kristal Morse and 23-year-old Casey Harbison. Morse and Harbison were living with 43-year-old Tiffany Whalen at the time of the incident.

During several interviews, Morse and Harbison told police they were unsure how the baby was injured. Morse also told investigators the child was born in Washington and that they were “under investigation by Washington Child Services for medical neglect” of the child.
Morse also stated she and Harbison were “semi-homeless” and had moved in with Whalen. Investigators traveled to the home to gather more evidence and found it “extremely dirty with dog feces and the smell of cat urine and smoke.” A report stated the crib had a blanket on top of it and pillows inside that could possibly suffocate a child.
Morse told police she sometimes “wants to punch things,” and would become frustrated and overwhelmed, but she said she did not injure the infant. However, she later told police the following:

“It was me. I don’t know what you want to hear, it was me.”
Harbison mentioned a couple of occasions the infant may have been injured. He said he dropped the child and pushed him off the bed on accident. He also requested a paper to write the following:

“It was an accident.”

“I never wanted him to hurt.”
“There will be no next time regardless.”

“He had a blanket over his head.”

“But I think I suffocated him.”

“I think I put the blanket on my sweet boy, this is my fault.”
On May 10, Morse took a polygraph test. Police told her she failed the test and interviewed her again.

Morse told police she had seen Harbison place a blanket over the baby’s face twice to stop him from crying. She also stated she had seen “on one occasion a fist to the head.” Whalen reportedly told Morse she also saw this happen.

Morse told investigators “it was blurry,” but she remembered punching the 5-month-old in the back of the head.

“Kristal stated that she feels that where she punched juvenile victim is where he had a fracture,” the report said.
On Monday, the 5-month-old died at the hospital.

Casey Harbison was sentenced to 20 years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) on Wednesday afternoon, receiving 629 days of jail credit for the charge of Injury to a Child by Recklessness, resulting in Serious Bodily Injury by Omission.
EverythingLubbock.com previously reported that Harbison, Kristal Morse and Tiffany Whalen were arrested in May 2024 after it was determined that their five-month-old baby had suffered “non-accidental” injuries after he was brought to Covenant Children’s ER.
The affidavit obtained by EverythingLubbock.com revealed that Harbinson claimed he woke up and found the infant in his crib, “cold and limp,” and his eyes “appearing to roll back.” The affidavit also revealed that Morse admitted to investigators that she struck the baby in the back of the head.

The affidavit said Harbinson claimed “it was an accident” and “never wanted to hurt [the baby].” Harbinson was accused of placing a blanket over the baby’s face to stop him from crying.

24-year-old Kristal Morse will serve more than two decades in prison for her role in the death of a five-month-old baby in 2024.
Morse informed police that the baby was born in Washington and that the two were being investigated by Washington Child Services for “medical neglect.”

Morse and Harbison were “semi-homeless,” according to Morse. When investigators went to Whalen’s home, where the two moved into, they discovered dog feces and said it was “extremely dirty” and smelled like cat urine and smoke.

During her interview, Morse said she sometimes “wants to punch things,” but denied hurting the baby. However, she told police, “it was me. I don’t know what you want to hear, it was me.”
Judge Eichman sentenced Morse on Friday to 25 years in TDCJ.
