A Columbus mother whose 3-year-old son died after reportedly pulling hot water off of a stove and onto himself at a South Franklinton apartment is now facing criminal charges.

Laronda Mims, 45, was indicted by a Franklin County grand jury on charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering children. Court records show prosecutors have requested a warrant for Mims' arrest.

Mims is charged under a section of law that accuses her of creating a "substantial risk to the health or safety of the child by violating a duty of care, protection or support."
Around 7:45 a.m. on Jan. 6, Mims called 911 and told dispatchers her young son, 3-year-old Emmanuel Mims, had pulled hot water off of the stove and onto himself. The boy was not responsive when police and paramedics arrived at the apartment on the 900 block of Eaton Avenue in South Franklinton.

Emmanuel was rushed to Nationwide Children's Hospital but died at 8:18 a.m. that morning, police said.

That poor child. What a horrific way to go! I hope he went into shock immediately and was too out of it to feel everything.
I had a friend in high school who had some gnarly scars on her back from pulling down a pot of coffee on herself as a toddler. She was resting her back against a counter/table thing, was playing with/grabbing at a towel that was hanging down and walked off while holding it...the pot of coffee was resting on the edge of the towel, so she pulled it right down.
Since that was a smaller pot of coffee and it STILL left those kinds of scars, I can only imagine what kind of trauma this little innocent soul suffered when pulling off a pot of boiling water while front facing.
Hope at least it was truly an accident and we don't find out there was some horrific abuse going on.

The death of a 3-year-old boy whose mother said he dumped hot water on himself at a South Franklinton apartment has been ruled an accident.
An autopsy from the Franklin County Coroner's office shows 3-year-old Emmanuel Mims died Jan. 6 as a result of complications from thermal injuries.
Emmanuel had second-degree burns over more than a third of his body, including his torso, back and arms, according to the report. The boy had no significant burns on his hands or feet, the autopsy report said.

Prosecutors brought charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering against Emmanuel's mother, 45-year-old Laronda Mims. A spokesperson for the Franklin County Prosecutor's office said in an email statement the office intends to move forward with the charges in the case despite the coroner's findings.

Laronda Mims was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering children back in January, just days after she said her son spilled a pot of boiling water on himself. Emmanuel Mims died from the burns he suffered.

"My baby grabbed some hot water off the stove, and I don’t know if he’s conscious," the boy's mother told a 911 operator back on Jan. 6.
In addition to Monday's ruling that Mims is incompetent for trial, she was ordered to undergo therapy.
