Two adults were arrested in connection to the drowning of a 5-month-old boy in Cincinnati.

According to a release from the Cincinnati Police Department, officers were dispatched on May 16 to respond to a report of an unresponsive child.

Upon arrival, officers found a 5-month-old boy who was drowning. Although life-saving measures were administered, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

19-year-old Degary Burbridge and 19-year-old Kiara Nettles were arrested and charged with reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich alleges the couple left the infant alone in the bathroom in a baby bathtub filled with water.

Pillich alleges it wasn't until someone asked about the child that the couple went to check on the infant and found him face down and unresponsive in the bathtub.

Despite efforts to save the infant—5-month-old Jalen Burbridge—was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There is absolutely no justification for leaving an infant unattended near water – under any circumstances,” Pillich said. “This child’s death was not just a tragedy; it was entirely preventable and should never have happened.”

A Cincinnati couple avoided prison time after pleading guilty in connection with the drowning death of their infant son in 2025.

Degary Burbridge and Kiara Nettles were sentenced to 90 days at the River City Correctional Center and will serve five years of probation.

According to Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich, the couple left the baby unattended in a baby bathtub filled with water in May 2025.

Prosecutors said a third person later asked about the child, prompting Burbridge and Nettles to check on him. Authorities said they found the baby face down and unresponsive.
