Another child, who was 2, was found unresponsive in a bathtub and later died.

Chicago police say the woman, who remains in critical condition, jumped out the window after stabbing her 70-year-old father several times.

The Chicago Police Department was dispatched around 1:50 a.m. to an apartment complex, where they found the woman, believed to be in her 30s, lying on the ground with a 1-year-old, FOX32 reported, citing law enforcement.

The man reportedly told police that the young woman is his daughter, and that she had stabbed him before grabbing her young son and jumping out the window.

The relationship between the suspect and the second child was not immediately clear. Police did not identify the woman.

The children were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago where they were pronounced dead, FOX32 reported. The suspect and her father were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where they are in critical condition.

The circumstances surrounding the stabbing and infants’ deaths were not immediately clear.

Two infants died Thursday after a woman stabbed her father, left one baby in a bathtub then jumped from an 11th floor apartment in South Shore with her son, according to preliminary information from Chicago police.

After building security directed them to the 11th floor apartment, the officers found an unresponsive male baby in the bathtub and a 70-year-old man with stab wounds and cuts to his face and body, police said. The man told officers that his daughter stabbed him before jumping out of the window with her son.

Both infants were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said. The man and woman were hospitalized at the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Aleah Newell, 20, and her 7-month-old son Amir were found on the ground outside their South Shore building just before 2 a.m. on Thursday.

When officers got to Newell’s apartment, they discovered her 2-year-old son Jontavious unresponsive in a bathtub, with cuts on his face and blisters from the scalding water, the report said.

Cordell Walker, who is believed to be either Newell’s 70-year-old father or grandfather, was found alive, with cuts on his face and body.

Police said the young mom stabbed Walker before leaping from the building.

Both of her sons were pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital. They were the Windy City’s first homicides of 2020, according to the outlet.

Newell and Cordell were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. Neither was conscious on Thursday evening.

Relatives told the outlet that Newell downed some pills before attacking her children and Walker. Her brother killed himself in 2017, they said.

The 20-year-old woman and a 1-year-old boy were found about 2 a.m. Thursday on the ground outside a high-rise in the 7200 block of South Shore Drive.

Police have security video from the building showing the child and the woman separately falling to the ground within seconds of each other, police sources said. The woman struck scaffolding before she hit the ground, sources said.

Building security employees took officers to the apartment where they found a 2-year-old in a bathtub and a 70-year-old man with stab wounds and cuts to his face and body, police said. The child in the tub was scalded and had “lacerations to the head,” police said.

They’re still sedated so we have not been able to interview them,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Thursday night, adding that detectives have made contact with some famil oky members.

A family friend said the woman and about 10 other relatives just last week moved out of their home in the 8800 block of South Parnell Avenue in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

The family friend said the deaths of the children weren’t the only brushes with tragedy the family has endured in recent years.

In the summer of 2018, he said, three members of the family — including the woman’s brother — were shot and wounded outside the Parnell Avenue home.

A young Chicago mother accused of throwing her baby son to his death from an 11th-story window, killing his older brother in a bathtub and stabbing her grandfather, had reportedly tried to surrender her children to a shelter just days earlier but was turned away.

Police said early Thursday morning, 20-year-old Aleah Newell tossed her youngest son, seven-month-old Amir Newell, from her family's apartment and then jumpingin a failed suicide attempt.
Police then entered the bathroom and found Newell's two-year-old son, Jontavious 'John John' Newell, dead in the bathtub with severe lacerations to his head and body, and blisters from being scalded by hot water.
The 20-year-old mom-of-two reportedly wanted someone to take her children because she said she could not care for them by herself.

Shelter resident Adiranne Thomas told WGN Newell seemed 'fed up' and did not know what to do.

Thomas quoted the mother as telling some of the other women at the shelter, 'I can't do it, I can't take care of them.'

According to Thomas, when Newell asked shelter officials during the intake process if they could help her with her boys, she was told that they could not assist her and that she had to do it on her own.

A spokesperson for Salvation Army could neither confirm nor deny that Newell had sought help at the shelter, citing client confidentiality.

This is incredibly sad. She sought help...I can't agree with killing her babies but she understood enough to try and get help - she knew she could not care for them. Why didn't someone at the shelter redirect her? Shelter officials should have taken better steps - they may have misunderstood her asking for help but they should have continued observing her...common sense people! Common sense would tell most of us that when someone makes a statement like that things are not OK.

According to prosecutors, Newell was in the apartment early Thursday morning when she began running hot water into a bathtub in the residence. As her grandfather used the restroom, Newell allegedly came up behind him, placing him into a chokehold. She then allegedly used a towel bar to strike the victim in the head, grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and stabbed the man more than 10 times in the ear, neck, shoulders, hands, arms and mouth until he lost consciousness.

Prosecutors then say that Newell stabbed her 7-month-old son Ameer 19 times, then put him facedown in the bathtub, where he suffered extensive burns.
Finally, Newell went to the living room, cut a hole in the window screen, and threw her 2-year-old son out of the 11th story window.

The boy, identified as Johntavis Newell, died from multiple fractures to his head and blunt force trauma from the fall.

Police say that Aleah Newell then jumped from the window herself, but her fall was broken by scaffolding on the third floor of the building. She suffered a broken wrist and ankle, but was awake and alert after the fall.

Zera Newell said her daughter had been living with her, but wanted to start her own life.

Newell wishes something more could have been done.

“They should have helped her, if they knew she wasn't fit they should have called me,” Newell said. “They could have called a member of the family to get the kids. so to me, they're responsible for it too.”

... Why did she run from mom?

... Mom had to have been blind to not see her daughter struggling!?

Tortured dad and baby in front of the toddler that was thrown to his death and this thing gets a broken wrist and ankle ? Wow

They being the government - If we had a government that cared at all they would have posted a couple of social workers in the hallway 24/7

Wonder if the kids are dad/granddads.
Probably not granddad , article doesn't mention he was visually impaired

Should be death penalty

This bitch wanted ALL her victims to suffer, she wanted it to hurt. Even the 11 story fall, while an instantaneous death, would be immeasurably traumatic and terrifying mentally to anyone, let alone a young child.

One of the most cruel and sadistic crimes detailed on this board in some time. There should be zero attempt at understanding or emphathizing this monster. She should be tried quickly, found guilty, and sentenced to die on a table or in a cage, preferably the former. Worthless sociopath trash.

How is this relevant to anything?

So disgusting how everyone is just attacking the grandmother in this thread. The grandmother didnt brutally slaughter 3 people. There is no excuse, and likely nothing anyone could have done.

I wouldn't assume the places she begged for help failed her. They probably wouldn't do what she wanted which was take the kids off her hands, not ask her so many questions, (especially about mental health problems) and not try to figure out ways to help her keep the family together. (Because that is their primary job, to help the entire family.)
She was too unstable but they can't be expected to know just how bad it was inside her head.
I know a mentally ill guy who asks for help, then when a doctor or agency agrees to help and starts asking questions to assess the problem, he gets angry and literally runs away. Then claims he was mistreated.

Evicted? An entire family unable to cope.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the two boys killed Thursday in the city’s South Shore neighborhood are 7-month-old Ameer Newell and 2-year-old Johntavis Newell.

The woman, Aleah Newell, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in the deaths of her 7-month-old baby and her 2-year-old son, according to a court document from the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors said Newell was running a bath at her grandfather's apartment on New Year's Day when her grandfather came in to use the toilet. Newell then put him in a chokehold and used a towel bar to hit him in the head, they said.
According to the court document, she took a knife from the kitchen while her grandfather was trying to recover from the attack and charged at him, stabbing him repeatedly even after he fell to the ground.

After her grandfather lost consciousness, Newell attacked Ameer, her 7-month-old son, with the knife before plunging him into the tub of hot water, prosecutors said. She left the baby in the tub while the faucet continued to run, they said.
Newell's attack continued as she targeted Johntavis, the 2-year-old, who was in the living room, according to the court document. Prosecutors said she picked up her son and tossed him from the 11th-story window.
Newell was diagnosed with a mood disorder in the summer after an attempted suicide, prosecutors said. She was staying at a homeless shelter for two days at the end of December before calling on New Year's Eve to ask her mother to pick up the children, according to the court document.

@JackBurton I wasn't attacking the grandmother.. I am assuming grandmother was trying to lead her correctly and wasn't taking any excuses. It turns out she had mental problems and told her mom she wanted to get her life together. Mom probably laid the law down about taking her meds, which she should have. Grandmother had her hands full and tied watching a train wreck in progress .. I have sympathy for her.
