A five-year-old boy was murdered Thursday afternoon and police said the child’s father is under arrest and charged with aggravated murder.

Parma police said they were called out to the home around 2 p.m. after the dad, Matthew Ponomarenko, 31, called 911 and said he just killed his son after hearing voices.

Ponomarenko told the 911 dispatcher he beat his son with a baseball bat and his body was on the living room floor.

Detectives, crime scene investigators, and the Medical Examiner’s Office were on the scene for hours, gathering evidence and taking photographs of the crime scene.

Johnathan Cherni, the uncle of the five-year-old, says he was an amazing child. He was autistic and learned to use a tablet to communicate.

Cherni also tells 19 News that the boy’s father was recently released from a behavioral health center and was off of his medication, but earlier in the day, he appeared fine, “My mom dropped him off today. He was fine; he was vibrant, completely content, and all of a sudden, we get hit with all this.”

The Parma father accused of beating his 5-year-old son to death with a baseball bat pleaded not guilty during his Friday arraignment.

Matthew Ponomarenko, 31, is charged with aggravated murder and child endangerment in the killing of his son Jax Ponomarenko.

Ponomarenko, who has his son’s name tattooed above his left eye, appeared via a live video from the Cuyahoga County Jail.

The boy’s maternal grandmother asked Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Dick Ambrose to order Ponomarenko jailed without bond. Ambrose continued the bond at $5 million.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley’s office is still deciding whether to pursue charges against Ponomarenko that would make him eligible for the death penalty if he is convicted in the case.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner determined Jax died of blunt force impacts to his head and ruled his death a homicide.

A father accused of beating his 5-year-old son to death with a baseball bat will now spend the rest of his life in jail.

Matthew Ponomarenko, charged with aggravated murder in the 2021 death of his son, Jax Ponomarenko, pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County court Thursday, Nov. 9, officials said.

He was sentenced to life in prison but will be eligible for parole after 45 years.

“Matthew Ponomarenko brutally beat and killed his own son,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley said in a statement. “With this sentence, I hope that the family can find a modicum of peace and solace. May Jax’s memory forever live in their hearts.”

Police in Parma released 911 audiofollowing the March 25, 2021, killing of Jax. In the audio, Matthew Ponomarenko confessed to the killing, but did not tell the dispatcher why he committed the act.

“I just killed my son,” the father told the shocked dispatcher, McClatchy News reported.

“What do you mean you just killed your son?” the dispatcher responded without hesitation.

“I’m hearing voices,” Ponomarenko said.

He told the dispatcher he used a baseball bat to kill his son, who was found dead in the living room of the Cleveland-area home, McClatchy News reported at the time.

There was evidence found at the scene of “torture” and “reckless abuse,” WJW reported.

“I’d like to say I’m sorry,” Ponomarenko said during his sentencing Thursday, WKYC reported.

The Parma dad convicted of beating his five-year-old son to death with a baseball bat in 2021 took his own life in prison.

Parma police confirmed Matthew Ponomarenko died by suicide on Dec. 7 at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.

I can confirm Matthew Ponomarenko died on December 7th due to an apparent suicide. The official cause of death will be determined upon receipt of the death certificate.

He was at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.

The incident is being reviewed, which is standard procedure following the death of an incarcerated person.

19 News spoke to Ponomarenko’s family they did not want to do an interview but said he was not receiving the mental health treatment he needed in prison.

19 News discovered letters from Ponomarenko’s family in July asking a Judge for mental health support while incarcerated. One of those letters was written by Jax’s mother.

“Maybe if someone listened to Matt back then, I would still have my son,” wrote the woman. “He needs help. He needs people to listen.”

Before his death, Ponomarenko filed a petition to vacate his conviction in November . He claimed he had a mental illness and didn’t understand what was happening when he signed his plea deal. The courts were never able to make a ruling on his request.
