Laura Sowders, 20, is in jail after a 1-year-old child was found in a York County home filled with trash and feces, according to court documents.
On March 30, an investigator for the York County Sheriff’s Office was assigned to look into a report from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The report alleged Sowders was living with the child in a home that had unsanitary and unsafe conditions.
The investigator contacted the parole officer who made the report. The parole officer said she conducted a walkthrough of the home with Sowders on March 27 and witnessed trash overflowing from the bins and feces on the first floor, documents show. A strong odor of animal urine also was present throughout the home, according to the sheriff’s office.
The parole officer also walked through the basement, where the child was, and found similar conditions, the investigator wrote.
The investigator and a lieutenant went to the home on March 31 to conduct another walkthrough. While there, he found four large dogs and two small dogs inside and unsanitary conditions, similar to what the parole officer described, documents show.
