A couple in the small town of Sodus in upstate New York were brutally gunned down in a targeted hit on their street on Monday, while their baby sat in their car.

Joshua Niles, 28, and Amber Washburn, 24, were on outside their home in the neighborhood outside of Rochester on Monday at 2pm when someone wearing a hood shot Joshua.

He crumpled under the car before the suspect turned to Amber and shot her while she was still inside the vehicle.

After the horrific shooting the individual, who is still at large, fired several more rounds into Joshua, before fleeing off on foot.

The couple's three-month-old baby was in the backseat of the car, and was unharmed.

The incident unfolded near the Sodus Central School District where the schools were placed temporarily on lockdown, and remained closed Tuesday while the incident was being investigated.

The couple had lived on the street for less than a year, and police are saying this was a targeted hit on the couple, however they have few leads as to who the suspect is.

They add there is no current danger to the community, despite the jarring incident.

The couple's neighbor, Anthony Mancine, who witnessed the shooting first hand, told News10NBC: 'I heard what I thought was fireworks then I glanced over there, saw a guy fall under the car.'

He added 'The person [suspect] was shooting like six to seven rounds.'

Mancine called 911 immediately.

As I was talking to 911, the person turned and shot at the girl in the car,' Mancine added.

'Then the person [suspect] turned and shot at the individual on the ground and fired another six to seven shots into him.'

The suspect was last seen wearing a dark-hooded sweatshirt and a green hat. Police have declined to elaborate if the shooter is a male or female.

Two Texas police officers and one of their wives have been charged in connection to the murder of a couple who were gunned down outside their New York home in front of their four-year-old son after a custody battle.

Joshua Niles, 28, and Amber Washburn, 24, were fatally shot outside their home in the small upstate town of Sodus on October 22.

Investigators now believe Timothy Dean, 32, who was the police chief of the Texas city of Sunray, is responsible for pulling the trigger.

Dean's 25-year-old wife, Charlene Childers, is the ex-girlfriend of Niles and the mother of two of his other children.

Friends and relatives said Niles had recently won custody of his and Childers' nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son.

Dean was charged on Monday with first and second-degree murder and conspiracy in the slayings.

His wife Childers was charged with conspiracy the same day.

Police do not have evidence of Childers being in New York on the day of the killings, but they believe her husband had driven 1,400 miles from Texas to get there.

Authorities said on Wednesday they have since arrested a third suspect in Texas, 34-year-old Bron Bohlar, on a warrant for conspiracy.

Bohlar is also a law enforcement officer in Sunray.

Of all the murder trials he's presided over, Wayne County Judge Daniel Barrett said Thursday that a grisly double murder in Sodus last fall was the most senseless and tragic killing he's ever seen.
Looking at Charlene Childers before sentencing her, who testified in May to conspiring with her husband, Timothy Dean, to kill her ex-boyfriend over custody of their two children, Barrett said he found her cavalier and unemotional testimony disturbing.

"It was like asking Timothy Dean to go out to dinner, and you knew he would say yes," Barrett said. "He was your puppet and you manipulated him, and he would have done whatever you said."
Barrett sentenced Childers, one of three defendants and the mastermind behind the murder plot, to 28 years in state prison at Wayne County Court on Thursday morning. The sentence was part of her plea agreement.
Childers, 26, spoke at her sentencing and apologized for her actions.

"What I did was wrong and I regret it every single day," Childers said. "I would like to apologize for my wrongs. I realize that saying sorry doesn't bring them back. ... Because of my selfishness, I ruined my children's lives."
In court last month, Childers said she was the driving force behind the plot to kill Niles, her ex-boyfriend and father of two of her children. In August 2018, Niles was granted custody of the two kids, who had previously lived with her in Texas.

Timothy Dean was stoic as Wayne County Sheriff's deputies led him inside the courthouse Friday morning.
His face betrayed no emotion as words like "coward" and "psychopath" were used to describe him as he was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for his role in a double murder in Sodus last year.

"Your actions are certainly one of the most horrendous, inhumane, and simply pure evil acts that I have ever encountered in my career," Wayne County Judge Daniel Barrett said to Dean.

In May, a jury found Dean guilty of gunning down Joshue Niles in his driveway and shooting his fiance, Amber Washburn, in the head as she came home at the wrong time. Washburn died instantly; Niles was shot 10 times.
Dean is a former chief of the Sunray Police Department in Texas. The judge noted that he took an oath to serve and protect and the only one he served and protected was Childers.

"You will certainly die in prison," Barrett addressed Dean. "Before that, I hope you wake up every day and are haunted by what you've done."
"Beyond the criminality and immortality of your acts, I don't know what one of you three genuises thought you would get away with this," Barrett said. "Two of you were police officers. How did you think this was going to work? What a waste."
