The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office says they received an anonymous tip of an injured dog with a nearly detached leg in Bagdad, Arizona. Bagdad is near Wikieup, in northwest Arizona.

When YCSO arrived at the home on October 28, deputies found the dog and discovered the left rear leg severely mangled, with a large portion of bone visible.

Two women, 28-year-old Maria Hooke (right) and 21-year-old June Stevens (left), admitted to owning the dog.

The two said that about two weeks ago, they left the purebred husky, named Sister, alone while they were on a three-day trip that took place over two weeks ago. They allegedly told YCSO that when they returned, they found the dog entangled in a leash, resulting in the injured leg. Hooke and Stevens reportedly admitted to using wire cutters to free the dog.

They say that over the next two weeks, the injury continued to get worse and that they had planned to visit a vet after getting paid on the upcoming Friday.

The vet the two claimed to have contacted, however, says they never received a call from either person.

After being rescued, YCSO says the dog’s leg had to be amputated because of the severity of the injury.

Hooke and Stevens face various counts of animal cruelty charges, including one felony count of animal cruelty resulting in serious physical injury.

The husky is said to be recovering after surgery and doing well and in the care of the Yavapai Humane Society. YHS intends to eventually be able to adopt out Sister once she is healthy.

Yavapai Humane Society
On October 29, 2019, a female Husky named “Sister” was saved by the Yavapai County Animal Control Department from a horrific situation of extreme abuse. Sister suffered for weeks with a leg that was essentially detached due to her owner’s willful neglect. Upon detection of Sister’s grave condition, the Yavapai County Animal Control Department quickly transported Sister to Prescott Pet Emergency Clinic to have her damaged leg bandaged prior to bringing Sister to the Yavapai Humane Society (YHS) for comprehensive medical treatment. Upon arrival to YHS, Sister was instantly prepped for surgery where her damaged leg was amputated in order to save her life. Within 24 hours after the surgery, Sister was up on her feet and going through the rehabilitation process to teach her how to walk on three legs.
After Sister completed the initial phase of her rehabilitation she was assigned to Gabe Alexander, YHS Medical Clinic Manager, and Gabby Goode, YHS Veterinary Tech, for medical fostering. Sister immediately bonded with Gabe and Gabby and their dog, Koa. Sister and Koa love to play and run around outside and then cuddle together on their dog bed in front of the fireplace where it’s nice and toasty. Sister enjoys her treats and toys, but she really loves to go for rides in the car! Her favorite activity is to come to YHS and comfort other dogs recovering from surgery. She’s a sweet angel with a heart of gold who has adjusted so well to her new life – even after the horrors that she had to endure from her previous owners.
The two women, Maria Hooke and June Stevens, who inflicted this abuse upon Sister were sentenced today and will be receiving a punishment of 12 days in jail, 3 years of probation with no drugs or alcohol allowed and thousands of dollars in fines. Due to the public outcry regarding this case both women lost their jobs and ultimately their home and have relocated to Gila County where they will serve out their probation.
Sister was saved because of an anonymous tip called into the Yavapai County Animal Control Department. Please, if you see abuse happening to an animal, call the authorities and help to save that animal from what Sister went through.

12 days in jail? Oh that pisses me the fuck off. Burn them both alive after completely removing their skin bit by bit. Yes, I can get serial killer disturbing towards people who hurt animals.
heh

  • 12 days in jail
  • 3 years of probation
  • no drugs or alcohol allowed

I'ma bet if the probation officer pays attention, they will violate that prohibition shit.

I wonder why the prohibition shit tho. Seems weird

I've heard of probation officers drug testing people. Usually if there's no alcohol as a term of probation it means they have a serious problem with that as well.

Did you notice the silly-looking little dog next to the husky? And in the original pic there is a little brown dog foot sticking out from the bottom of the towel that makes it look like this little dog has a rear leg that is as long as the whole length of its body. Something funny with the perspective on that.
