A pregnant dog left to die from stab wounds is recovering at Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

On Tuesday, the ranch got a call from a shelter in Miami saying they needed help. A dog, who they named Beauty, had been stabbed at least five times in her neck, face, leg and stomach, and was lying on the side of the road.

"She was full of dirt. All her cuts were bleeding. Just exhausted, dehydrated, pretty much had just given up," explained the Founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Lauree Simmons, "They were very straight cuts and somebody definitely tried to hurt her really bad."

To make matters worse, Beauty is also pregnant. Veterinarians at the ranch say they counted nine puppies in her belly.

"It’s just horrifically sad that somebody, to such a sweet and defenseless animal like her, could cut her up so bad and just toss her out," said Simmons.

Beauty received immediate medical care to staple the gaping wounds closed, antibiotics to fight her infections, and a bath to remove the fleas and ticks.

24 hours later, in the comfort of her own little house, she's now eating and even walking around.

Big Dog Ranch says she and her puppies, who are due in a couple weeks, will all survive.

"She is the kindest, sweetest soul, and she deserves to know what love is from a home that cares for her, and a home where she will never be hurt again," Simmons said.

Beauty's puppies will be ready for adoption eight weeks after they're born. Beauty herself will be ready for a loving home in about 12 weeks.

Her Recovery and Puppies
  • The Birth: Shortly after her rescue, Beauty gave birth to eight healthy puppies (four boys and four girls). [1]
  • The Care: Because of the severity of her stab wounds, shelter staff bottle-fed her puppies while Beauty focused on her medical recovery. [1]
  • The Timeline: Her puppies were put up for adoption after eight weeks, while Beauty was carefully rehabilitated and cleared for her own forever home after 12 weeks of recovery.

The four boys and four girls were placed in a Big Dog Ranch Rescue foster home, where volunteers and staff bottle-fed them around the clock to give Beauty time to heal from her extensive stab wounds. [1, 2]
Once they reached eight weeks of age, the puppies were officially cleared for adoption. Because of the high-profile nature of Beauty's rescue, the shelter received an outpouring of public support, and all eight puppies quickly found their forever families. [1, 2]
