I just need to vent for a moment. I was hoping someone else would link the security footage video that was leaked because I saw it on my phone, and I'm horrible at adding video or other links here. I finally decided that I was going to do it myself from my desktop today, but all instances of the security video seem to have been removed from every site I watched it on! I watched the video, and I hope some of you other DDs got to see it, too.

In the video, the grandfather is first squatted down next to Chloe. Chloe runs over to the bank of windows. He gets up and follows her. He stands at the window rail and LEANS OVER THE RAIL, towards the open window if not through it! There is an 18-inch space between the rail and the open window, but he LEANED OVER THE RAIL. He then bends down, picks up Chloe, and stands her on the rail. They lean forward, and she slips. He leans farther, then collapses to the floor.

I'm sorry, it's a terrible tragedy. It's an accident of monumental proportions. I just don't see how it was the cruise line's fault in any way. From the video, it looks like, and this is my opinion/interpretation, he knew the window was open. Maybe he stood her up there to let her look down, and lost his grip. I don't think it was in any way intentional to drop the baby. I'm sure it was a horrible, irreversible accident, but it was the grandfather's negligence, not the cruise line's. I'm sure the family, and the grandfather especially, want it to be someone else's fault, but it's just not.

I saw it. It looked like he held up in thin air and dropped her. It was odd to say the least.

Fuck this asshole!

That motherfucker is a lying fucking shitbag. I agree he didn't intentionally kill the child, but blaming it one the cruise line, because he is colorblind and couldn't see the window is fucking bullshit and he fucking knows it. He leaned way outside the window before the child ran over to him. That geriatric fuck sat the little girl up there, knowingly there was no glass, and trusting his old, shaky hands would hold a squirming toddler.

Then instead of admitting to it, like the decent and right thing to do, he becomes a fucking bastard and blames everyone, but himself. Now, the family wants a big, fat pay day from the cruise line, even though it was caused by the negligence of their tottering, old, lying fucktard of a grandfather. Fuck them.

Grandfather who dropped toddler to her death from cruise ship window was 'unquestionably' aware it was open, court docs claim as he faces three years in Puerto Rico prison for her death
'This is not a case of an unknowing child approaching an open window and falling out because the window was defective or improperly positioned.

'Rather, this is a case about an adult man, Chloe's step grandfather who, as surveillance footage unquestionably confirms: (1) walked up to a window he was aware was open; (2) leaned his upper body out the window for several seconds; (3) reached down and picked up Chloe; and (4) then held her by and out of the open window for thirty four seconds before he lost his grip and dropped Chloe out of the window.

'His actions, which no reasonable person could have foreseen, were reckless and irresponsible and the sole reason why Chloe is no longer with her parents.'

I believed the family. Turns out the old fool belongs in prison. What adult could be so stupid? He should have come clean. The parents are going to be devastated again by this.

I believe they will still sue. Definitely the old man’s fault, but the window shouldn’t have been open.

I wonder who actually opened that window and how much guilt that person is feeling?

Windows are open all the time in the tropics in a situation like that. There is no reason why the window couldn't have been open.. That's why the sills are chest high.
There is no way the vessel or cruise line is responsible.

I’m not saying it wasn’t the grandfather’s fault. I watched the video. I think it was. It’s still my opinion that a public area equivalent to a many stories high building where thousands of people have access and alcohol is available in abundance should not have windows that open.

I don’t even necessarily think the cruise line should lose the lawsuit. I don’t know enough about the situation or legalities to answer that, so I wouldn’t even hazard a guess. The baby would still be alive if gramps hasn’t been irresponsibly unsafe; the open window afforded him that opportunity.

Grandfather charged in Granger girl's fall from cruise ship declines jury trial, will face judge
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — An Indiana man accused of dropping his granddaughter from an 11th floor window of a cruise ship docked in Puerto Rico last year declined his right to a jury trial on Monday.
Salvatore Anello, who is charged with negligent homicide in the death of 18-month-old Chloe Wiegand, of Granger, will instead face a judge. The case is expected to be heard in April.

"The grandfather of the 18-month-old girl who fell to her death from an open window on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will plead guilty in her death, a family attorney said Tuesday.

Salvatore Anello, also known as Sam, initially pleaded not guilty to a negligent homicide charge from Puerto Rican authorities in October in the death of Chloe Wiegand in July.

Michael Winkleman, the attorney for the Wiegand family, told NBC News on Tuesday that Anello filed paperwork to change his plea in return for an agreement that included no jail time. Anello, who lives in South Bend, Indiana, will be able to serve his probation in Indiana, according to Winkleman.

Winkleman said the deal "is in the best interests of the family so that they can close this horrible chapter and turn their focus to mourning Chloe." A hearing date for the change of plea has yet to be determined."

"We obviously blame them for not having a safer situation on the 11th floor of that cruise ship," Kim Wiegand said. "There are a million things that could've been done to make that safer."
One thing the cruise line could do is not allow stupid, careless passengers place children in a dangerous situation that any average intelligent knucklehead aboard as passengers?

He had a history of multiple DUIs and refused a breath test after the incident.
The area he was in wasn't a play area. It had a bar in it though.
95% of the adults on a cruise ship will have booze in their system, even those with children on board. If he was that drunk..then the fault lies on the parents for letting him care for their child instead of doing it themselves.
