"The teen whose drowning led to a manslaughter charge against his father suffered severe autism, lived in “deplorable” conditions in the basement and had his arms bound when he was found face down in the family pool, court records show.

The father, Timothy Koets, 50, is facing multiple charges.

The parents have a lengthy history with Children’s Protective Services, records say.

“There are facts in this case that I think the public will find disturbing,” Ottawa County sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett said.

The 16-year-old victim, Samuel Koets, had severe autism, was non-verbal and had a history of aggression toward himself and others, according an abuse and neglect petition filed in Ottawa County Family Court.

After the drowning, authorities took temporary custody of the boy’s sister, with a disposition hearing set for Nov. 8.

Authorities said that the deceased teen’s bedroom was in the basement of the family’s house in the 4300 block of Port Sheldon Road. The conditions were described as “deplorable,” with a mattress on the floor without sheets and “multiple large spots of smeared fecal matter. In addition, fecal matter was smeared on the walls and dirty diapers were found throughout the room,” the petition said.

The bedroom had exposed wires and plumbing, the petition said.

On the day the teen died on March 28, his father left him outside, unsupervised, with his arms bound, court records said. The father told his wife, who was sleeping, that he was leaving for work.

The mother told police that she remained sleeping while the boy was outside.

At 4:10 p.m., the father texted his 13-year-old daughter, who just got back from school, “Okay would you make sure freak is okay? Is mom still asleep?” court records said.

The father told her that her brother was “supposed to be out back.”

A minute later, she texted that the boy was in the pool. They exchanged messages about him until 4:19 p.m. but the father did not mention calling 911, records said.

An 18-year-old sister of the victim told police that she saw him in the pool at 3:20 p.m. Investigators think he had been in the icy, above-ground pool, for an hour.

Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics removed the victim from the pool and tried to revive him.

“(The victim) was found with his arms bound to his body. Ice was noted to be in the pool due to the cold weather. The pool had no fence surrounding it and had over four feet of water in it,” authorities said in court records."

The only image of the boy on his FB is from 2009

A picture of the killer, egg and the sibs from 2017 no Samuel.

I was able to find a few more in his photos tab, but they're still all from about this age, and it was still far fewer than he has of the daughters. There are a couple under the wife's Facebook, same deal. One of them has his arms bound in a life jacket in water- the irony.
If you look at the comments under the pic for sunglasses spam on Tim's page, some people are actually defending him!

The charges accuse Tim Koets of leaving his son, Sam Koets, who had severe autism, outside, unsupervised, and with his arms bound the day he died. Detectives determined the boy got into the above-ground pool, which was filled with icy water, and drowned. He was in the water for about an hour before anyone found him.

Court records said on the day the teen died, his father told investigators he left Sam outside. Koets told investigators Sam likes to spin in circles for hours at a time, so he put him on the deck unattended, leaving him to spin.

Koets said Sam's arms were wrapped around his body in a wrap to keep his arms restrained.

The mother told police that she was sleeping while the boy was outside. Koets told detectives he probably should have waited to make sure his wife was "more woken up than she was."

Court records show Koets's 13-year-old daughter discovered Sam in the pool after returning home from school.

At 4:10 p.m., the father texted her “Okay would you make sure freak is okay? Is mom still asleep?”

The father told her that her brother was “supposed to be out back.”

A minute later, she texted that the boy was in the pool. They exchanged messages about Sam until 4:19 p.m. but the father did not mention calling 911, records said.

Sam's 18-year-old sister told police that she saw him in the pool at 3:20 p.m. that day. She told Investigators there's been times where her parents left Sam unattended in the pool and he was regularly left outside unattended, up to five hours at a time.

Court documents revealed the boy lived in deplorable conditions in the basement with feces spread around the room.

Records show Sam was kept in a basement room with no windows, no carpet and a bare mattress smeared with feces. Investigators said Sam was kept in the room for eight years as a bedroom because he would break things if he were kept in another bedroom.

According an abuse and neglect petition filed by Children’s Protective Services in Ottawa County Family Court, Sam had severe autism, was non-verbal and had a history of aggression toward himself and others.

Investigators said a behavioral interventionalist told them Sam was non-verbal and had the functioning level of a 13- to 17-month-old child.

Ottawa county records revealed that the couple has a lengthy history with Children’s Protective Services.

Children’s Protective Services in October 2014 substantiated allegations against the parents of improper supervision and threatened harm to the 13-year-old and 16-year-old children.

CPS developed a safety plan regarding the boy’s supervision. Multiple safety plans were established with the parents.

“In August 2015, safety plans were specifically established regarding supervision of (the boy) around water,” the petition said.

CPS provided the parents with door alarms two years ago to help supervise the boy. The parents said they did not use them.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said they've responded to 15 calls for service at the Koets home. Court records show the majority of the calls involved Sam wandering off from home unsupervised and sometimes naked. Also among the reports:

  • On June 12, 2013, Sam was found by a passerby playing outside his home naked and unsupervised.
  • On Sept. 11, 2014, Sam was found shirtless, shoeless and unsupervised at Rush Creek Park while Koets was home.
  • On May 31, 2017. deputies said they found Sam 1.45 miles from his Port Sheldon Road home.

@Satanica

Here comes the defenders fo these pieces of shit.
Samuel Koets, 16, had severe autism – he couldn’t talk or care for himself. To his parents, he was just their precious son.

“They tried to make his world good,” the father’s cousin, Joel Koets said.

“The way they dealt with it was amazing to me. Just very patient, very loving. I couldn’t do what they did for a week. It takes a special kind of person to take something like that on. From my perspective, Tim and Michelle are both saints.

Michelle and Timothy Koets lost their son in late March. He drowned in the backyard pool.

Last week, after nearly seven months of investigation by Ottawa County sheriff’s detectives, the father, a professor at Grand Rapids Community College, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony.

He was accused of gross negligence for leaving his son outside by the pool March 28 while he went to work. His wife, a registered nurse working third shift, was asleep inside.

The day after the drowning, their 13-year-old daughter was put in foster care. A hearing is next week in Ottawa County Family Court.

The uncertainty about the girl, followed by the criminal charges, has shocked the Koets family.

“They need love and support right now after losing Sammy,” Joel Koets said. “What’s happening – it’s a nightmare.”

Police say the teen, who functioned at the level of a toddler, was found in the pool with arms restrained. The water still had ice in it.

Joel Koets said that police and case workers haven’t told the whole story. He said his cousin tried to give his son a good life. They centered family activities on things Sam liked, like riding horses and going swimming.

He said that stories about his cousin’s arrest have offered unfair portrayals. He said that the father loved his son and would do anything for him. Few can fully grasp the challenges of having a children with severe autism, the cousin said.

“It’s easy when you don’t have an autistic child to say, ‘I’d do this,’ ‘I’d do that.’ Tim and Michelle never wanted to institutionalize Sammy. They put everything they had into their family. I wish people would empathize with the family for what they’re going through.

“I’ve seen from the outside what Tim and Michelle put into this to keep Sammy at home. They didn’t want him institutionalized. They didn’t have a lot of help.”

“From my perspective, Tim and Michelle are both saints. Maybe they didn’t do everything perfectly, but who does? The fact they didn’t institutionalize Sammy and gave it their best shot for 16 years – I look up to them both. I love them both. They’re very dear to me. I wouldn’t be able to do that same thing, myself. It takes a special kind of person to do that,” Joel Koets said.

The parents of a teen with autism who drowned in their backyard pool continued to fill his prescriptions after he died, and used the drugs themselves, an investigator said.

The allegations come two weeks after the father, Timothy Koets, 50, a professor at Grand Rapids Community College on administrative leave, was ordered to stand trial on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Samuel, 16, had severe autism, and had cognitive functioning of a 2-year-old, testimony has shown.

In a Monday, Dec. 23 news release, Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett said it appears the parents continued to refill their son’s medication through October.

“The investigation shows that the Koets were obtaining mostly Ritalin fraudulently and taking the drugs themselves,” Bennett said in a statement.

Bennett said that police learned that parents had been refilling prescriptions during the course of the death investigation.

“This occurred on multiple occasions after the death of their son,” he said.

The father is charged with three felonies related to the prescriptions: obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, false reporting to obtain a controlled substance and healthcare fraud, Bennett said.

The mother is facing a misdemeanor charge of obtaining a control substance by false representation.

Both are free pending arraignments in Hudsonville District Court.

Apparently the kid had a problem with self injury because every recent photo I find of him he has a helmet on and has his arms strapped to his body. Its really sad and depressing. That part is not the father's fault but the text message I found between the dad and one of his daughters made my blood boil. The day Sam drowned the dad texted his daughter and asked, "would you check to see if the freak is okay" or something to that effect. What a worthless piece of shit. I understand having a child with autism is really taxing because I have a 5 year old with higher functioning autism, but there is no excuse for this type of neglect. Institutionalize him if you can't handle caring for him rather than keeping him restrained and living in a barren shit smeared basement.

Left outside in March with an icy pool for an entire work shift? You can't make this sound normal. The fact that the 18 year old had known since 3:20 but said nothing is further evidence this family is living in Dysfunction Junction.

A father has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in his teenage son’s death, who drowned in the family’s backyard pool.

Timothy Koets also pleaded guilty to fourth-degree child abuse in an Ottawa County courthouse.

Koets, a former Grand Rapids Community College professor, was charged in October 2019 in the death of his 16-year-old son Sam Koets.

Sam, who doctors say had the cognitive ability of a 2-year-old, died in March 2019 after making his way into an above-ground pool at the family’s home near Hudsonville.

Authorities say Sam was in the icy pool for hours and died of cold water drowning. They say Koets’ daughter texted him a photo of Sam in the pool and he allegedly replied, “make sure the freak is OK.”

In January, Koets told “Inside Edition” in an interview that “freak” was a fun-hearted nickname.
In June, Michelle Koets was sentenced to 21 days in jail after pleading no contest to one misdemeanor charge of obtaining a controlled substance by false representation.

and maybe if the meds were given to the child he wouldn't have been such a threat to himself and others. I am basing that suspition on the fact that they continued to get and take the meds themselves after the death of the boy. I am pretty sure the parent(s) didn't get addicted to that med after the death of their child.. So if my suspition is right who was the real freak??

An Ottawa County judge sentenced a father to 2-15 years in prison Jan. 18, 2021, on an involuntary manslaughter charge in the death of his 16-year-old autistic son.

Timothy Koets, a former Grand Rapids Community College professor, would also face sentencing in charges of fourth-degree child abuse and obtaining a controlled substance

Koets pleaded guilty to two felonies and one misdemeanor Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020:

  • Involuntary manslaughter: 24-180 months in prison, with credit for 2 days, and fines and costs in the amount of $308.00
  • Fourth-degree child abuse: 365 days in jail, with credit for 2 days previously served
  • Obtaining a controlled substance by fraud: 24-48 months in prison and fines and costs in the amount of $308.00

I think it was suicide.

That's a horrible thing to say you don't know the young man
[automerge]1611109863[/automerge]
Sam was a sweet young man with a beautiful smile! His father should be in prison and so should his mother! His youngest sister needs help. But even more importantly we should be looking into the state as well. They failed Sam. They went to his house 15 times before he died.

Anyone who has anything bad or negative to say about Sam should be a shamed of themselves. His autism was challenging as it is for all who have autism, but he was so much more than just that. Sam's friends miss him dearly. Their hearts ache for him. A small sliver of justice for Sam has been served but not fully! He and all special needs people deserve so much more.
