Two parents are facing felony child abuse charges after their 7-month-old infant suffered injuries that eventually resulted in death.

An investigation was launched after Joel Dwayne Rodriguez-Brownell, 28, and Jalena Robin Rodriguez, 30, took the baby to the El Cajon Family Health Center on Aug. 17.

The child had several suspicious injuries and was suffering from shortness of breath, La Mesa police said.

Paramedics took the infant to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where officials determined the injuries occurred at the parents’ La Mesa home.

Medical staff found that several of the baby’s injuries were serious and life-threatening. Two days later, on Aug. 19, the child died.

The parents were originally arrested Aug. 18 on suspicion of child cruelty and abuse, but murder charges are now being sought against them.

The baby had knuckle marks on his forehead and went to the hospital with a swollen brain. The child also had a dislocated arm and leg, the documents said.

"The infant had been brought in to the clinic by his parents with several suspicious injuries and was suffering from shortness of breath, so clinic staff summoned paramedics who immediately transported the infant to Rady Children's Hospital," La Mesa Police wrote in a statement.

The boy died from his injuries August 19.

A woman who knows the couple told 10News Brownell and Rodriguez were homeless at points in their lives. Rodriguez was also a recovering drug addict, according to the woman.

“I don’t believe she relapsed. To me, the way she adored that baby and loved him, I don’t think she would pick up again and risk losing him,” the woman said.

The woman told 10News that Rodriguez called her on the day baby Joel was taken to the hospital. She said Rodriguez told her that Joel “was on life support and the doctors did not expect him to live, and he had a swollen brain.”

The exact cause of death was not immediately released by authorities, but court documents stated it was “by means of force that to a reasonable person would be likely to product great bodily injury, resulting in the child’s death.”

A judge on Friday ordered a La Mesa couple accused of causing the death of their infant son to stand trial on charges that include murder.

Joel Dwayne Brownell, 30, and Jalena Robin Rodriguez, 32, stand accused in the death of their 7-month-old child.

Authorities identified the baby only as Joel R. in court documents.

Brownell and Rodriguez, who face charges of murder, assault on a child causing death and felony child abuse, are next due in court on July 1.

A La Mesa couple were sentenced to state prison terms Wednesday in connection with the death of their infant son.
Joel Dwayne Brownell, 30, and Jalena Robin Rodriguez, 33, were arrested in 2019 for the death of their 7-month-old child identified only as Joel R. in court documents.

Brownell was convicted of murder and other charges by an El Cajon jury and was sentenced to 37 years to life in state prison. Rodriguez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder prior to her co-defendant's trial and received a 15 years-to life term on Wednesday.

The infant was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, where he died two days later. Police alleged the boy's ultimately fatal injuries were inflicted at his parents' home.
