The death of a child at an unlicensed daycare in Howard County is sending a woman to prison for perhaps the rest of her life.

Shirley Weber, 70 of Cresco, was sentenced Monday to up to 50 years behind bars and ordered to pay restitution of $150,000.

A jury found Weber guilty in July of child endangerment resulting in death.
Law enforcement says in June 2022, Weber was providing daycare services without a state license to 10 children at her home. Investigators say Weber put a child in his car seat that day and only buckled the top buckle. Prosecutors say the child then slid down in the seat, getting choked to death by that top buckle.

i don't know if there is same as here but people in jail still get oap if so those monthly checks plus what ever she earns while in jail, plus also here tuckshop money should all go to repay part of that 150,000 dollars... she has free room and board paid by tax payers and that is all that should be needed while in jail... other stuff like shampoo etc either use what is provided or if you have visitors then they can bring you unopened bottles etc that the guards can make sure no contraband in parcels

I'm not sure most Americans know what a tuckshop is, although in this case it's pretty clear. We didn't have hot lunch at my school in South Africa, but we had a tuckshop where you could buy hot meat pies. That's how my sister spiral broke her leg, running to the tuckshop! The whole school got a two+ hour lunch that day as we waited for the ambulance to get there since she was sprawled out in the middle of the one hallway. Ah the memories! It's funny how one word can bring them flooding back! ;)

If OAP is Old Age Pension then that would be equal to Social Security here. After a certain amount of time, like a month and you're still in jail, prison, then it's suspended, you can't collect SS while in jail for an extended time. If the prisoner does work and earn money, they are usually paid like 25 cents an hour, they do not make market wages. But if she does owe a significant amount then it would go to pay her restitution. Not sure if they take the money her family could put on her books for Twinkies and honeybuns.

Her cell should be wallpapered with Lucas' obituary

Lucas Ray Schloesser was born March 1, 2021, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, WI. He was baptized in both the Catholic and Lutheran churches. He was the happiest, most beaming little boy who never had a crabby morning and was full of hugs. Lucas loved his big brother, who taught him how to “wrestle”, and loved his fuzzy blanket. About two weeks after learning how to walk, Lucas decided he would run everywhere from then on out, regardless of balance. He had a certain strut- shoulders back and chest out- but would get suddenly very shy when his mom wanted to see him walk, insisting instead on being carried around. Lucas would dance to ZZ Top and rap music and his favorite word was “hmmm”. He loved his hot wheels cars, dogs, cottage cheese, and Cheetos.
