A 56-year-old Norwalk man was sentenced Thursday to six years for raping his 10-year-old granddaughter nearly two years ago.
Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek said the sentence stems from the state’s offer on the case and, although some might think the sentence was short considering what the man did, he said every effort was being made for the girl, who is now 12 or 13, to keep her from having to take the stand and testify about what her grandfather did to her.
The man,
whose name The Stamford Advocate is withholding to protect the young victim’s identity, was also sentenced to 20 years probation after pleading guilty to first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child. He was convicted in September 2018.
Ferencek said the state had “unequivocal” proof of the man’s guilt after the man’s DNA was matched to that found in the girl’s underwear and private parts.
Ferencek said the victim told her mother she was sexually assaulted in June 2017 and said her grandfather threatened to beat her if she told anyone. The child’s mother was at work and the girl was being watched by her grandfather when the assault occurred.
On the same day that the assault happened, the girl complained to her mother that her private parts hurt and she was eventually sent to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital where the DNA tests were done.
As part of the sentence, Judge Gary White said the grandfather will spend his life on the sex offender registry. At his last hearing, Ferencek said he would probably be deported.
