Investigators are looking into the suspicious death of a 2-year-old Allegan boy who died after sustaining injuries to his head and chest.

“He loved to play outside, he loved his sister, his cousins, his grandpa, his grandma,” Kayden Blackmer’s father David Holmes said. “He was full of life. He had just turned 2 eight days ago on the 3rd.”

He and Kayden’s grandmother told News 8 that Kayden and his 10-month-old sister Rosalee Blackmer arrived at Allegan General Hospital Saturday. Kayden was not breathing and unresponsive. Hospital personnel stabilized him and he was airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

He never woke up, family says.

Swelling and bleeding on his brain eventually caused his heart to keep stopping. He was taken off life support Monday.

Because of restrictions linked to the coronavirus pandemic, his father was not able to see his son in person before he died.

“Over the phone, they wouldn’t let me drive down there to say goodbye to him,” Holmes said.

Scans revealed that Kayden was struck multiple times in the head and chest, fracturing ribs and collapsing a lung.

Court documents show Children’s Protective Services has opened an investigation into their mother Khierstin Powers and her boyfriend, Joshua Martin.

Allegan County Sheriff’s Office investigators say the death is suspicious and they are talking to all persons of interest, but the family believes they know who is responsible.

“My daughter, his sister, also has bruising. She had fractured ribs and a skull fracture that were in the process of healing, so it wasn’t like it was all done in the same day,” Holmes told News 8 Tuesday.

Rosalee is out of the hospital and recovering.

Investigators say they are not ready to name anyone as a suspect at this stage but expect to make an announcement soon.

Monster, with dead dopey eyes like a cartoon camel.

I bet the little guy tried to protect his sister.
I hope someone was with him when he was in hospital. Covid or no Covid I would have been there. Even if the closest I could get was outside the building. I can't imagine his mother was with him.

I really hope he had one kind familiar face.

The Allegan County Prosecutor’s Office says it has issued a murder charge in the death of a 2-year-old earlier this year.

In addition to the felony murder charge, the prosecutor filed a first-degree child abuse charge. The prosecutor’s office cited additional medical reports and an autopsy in deciding to add the charges.

While the prosecutor would not confirm the name of the suspect or victim pending arraignment, the date of the death matches that of Kayden Blackmer, 2.

Kayden’s mother’s boyfriend Joshua Martin was charged earlier this year with second-degree child abuse in connection to the death and injuries sustained by Kayden’s 10-month-old sister Rosalee.

Kayden was unresponsive when he and his sister were taken to the hospital May 9. Family members said Kayden had injuries to the head and chest, including bleeding on his brain, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. He was removed from life support May 11.

Rosalee also had fractures to the skull and rib, her father told News 8, but was soon released from the hospital.

The Michigan Office of Children’s Ombudsman is investigating Kayden’s case, the office confirmed to News 8 in June. That means Kayden’s family had contact with Children’s Protective Services within two years of his death. The OCO will look at whether CPS could have done anything differently to prevent the death.

An Allegan man was sentenced Tuesday for causing the death of his girlfriend's 2-year-old son.

Joshua Duane Martin, 30, was sentenced by 48th Circuit Court Judge Roberts Kengis ordered to serve 24 to 60 years for second-degree murder and second-degree child abuse.

Martin was babysitting Kayden Blackmer on May 9, 2020, when he lifted Kayden above his head and threw him down onto a bed. Kayden's head struck a windowsill.

Martin did not seek help until Kayden stopped breathing some time later. Kayden did not wake up, and on May 11 he was taken off life support.

However, the extent of Kayden's injuries — listed as traumatic cardiac arrest, a collapsed lung, a pulmonary contusion, a subdural hematoma, brain and spinal cord injuries, optic hemorrhaging, four rib fractures and intracranial hypertension — and Martin's failure to do anything to help the gravely injured toddler swayed the judge to hand down a maximum sentence that would amount to the rest of Martin's life.

"I don't believe that these were accidental acts," Kengis said. "I think that either you intended to injure these children or you had a blatant disregard for them and you received some pleasure from treating them the way that you did. And what supports that opinion is the lack of medical care knowing the children had suffered serious injuries."

Separately, Martin was sentenced to 5-10 years on a child abuse conviction for injuring Kayden's sister, Rosalee, then 10 months old, who was treated for a skull fracture, rib fractures and appeared to have bruising on her face.

Martin previously said he would sometimes "bench press" Rosalee with one hand and had dropped her.

He will serve the sentences consecutively.
"He loved Kayden, he loved Rosalee," said Martin's defense attorney, Suzanne Klein. "This is such a tragic, sad case on so many levels. Josh was trying to take care of them in the best way that he could."

"I just wanted to be the greatest father that I could for these kids," Martin told the judge before he was sentenced.

"It's just not believable to me, Mr. Martin," Kengis said. "At the very least, you are minimizing your role in this case to make yourself look better to your family and your supporters in this case."
