A Long Island man is facing animal cruelty charges after police found several injured and tied-up cats outside the trash chute of an apartment building, police said.

According to authorities, the kittens and cats had suffered blunt force trauma and their bodies were bound with duct tape, before being placed in cardboard boxes and discarded into the trash chute of a residential building on Lincoln Avenue in Mineola.

It was unclear whether the cats were dead or alive when discovered.

After a thorough investigation, police arrested 37-year-old Justin Visconti, a resident of the building, according to officials.

The kittens and cats were bound with duct tape and wrapped in sheets and were found inside cardboard boxes, according to investigators, who added that the animals were then discarded into the building’s trash chute.

Police said the animals died from blunt force trauma.

"These cats were badly mutilated, these cats were tortured by some means," Jed Painter of the Nassau County District Attorney’s Animal Crimes Unit told WABC-TV. "We had multiple broken bones. In fact, one of the animals, pretty much every single bone in the body was broken."

he animals reportedly did not belong to Visconti and it is not clear where they came from.

Visconti's neighbor's found out about the deaths when police officers were knocking on doors, asking residents if they were missing their cats, according to the station, which added that residents also got a letter informing them about the disturbing discovery.

"This person needs help. That's terrible that something so innocent that doesn't understand what's happening to do that, that's the worst thing I can think of," one neighbor, who is a cat owner, reportedly said.

Visconti has a criminal history which includes prior arrests for grand larceny, stalking and aggravated harassment, WABC reported.

UPDATE (8/21/2023):
The defendant pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals — a felony — and was sentenced on Nov. 18, 2022 to time served and a 50-year animal ban. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office detective investigators, Nassau County Police Department, and Nassau County SPCA are monitoring Mr. Visconti for the duration of the ban, according to a deputy communications director with the Nassau County DA’s Office.
