A teenage girl from Arizona and her boyfriend have been charged with murder after the slaying of a 36-year-old woman last month.

Ottilia Piros, the girl's mother, was shot and killed at her home in Greece, N.Y., in December 2020.

Hannah Thomas, 17, and 16-year-old Richard Avila were reportedly visiting Piros for the Christmas holiday, local authorities said.

Both have been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Thomas and Avila are residents of Arizona. The pair were stopped by police on Dec. 29 in Saint Robert, Mo., for speeding in Piros' car.

After Thomas and Avila gave varied accounts of their trip and false information, officers decided to call the Greece Police Department to confirm that Piros had given them permission to use the car.

It was at that point that Piros' body was discovered.
Saint Robert officers also found a handgun in the vehicle that ballistics analysis showed was the gun used to shoot Piros in the head.

As family and friends mourn the death of Ottilia Piros, one of her furry companions is facing a long road to recovery.

According to Second Hand Dog Rescue, the dog, named Bella, is facing at least two to three surgeries to take care of conditions ranging from a mammary tumor to an ACL issue, among others.

In a Facebook post, the organization reports, before her murder, Piros had been trying to afford the surgeries for Bella. The first appointment is set up at York Animal Hospital for Thursday. In addition to her physical condition, organizers believe it will take Bella time to mentally recover from losing her owner.

"As of right now, the rescue is going to pay for the surgeries," Wendy Weisberg, the founder of Secondhand Dog Rescue, said. "We do need help with fundraising. We are not governmentally funded. We are privately funded, and basically, it's by whatever I have of my own money, and whatever money we can raise."
Bella was one of three dogs that belonged to Ottilia Piros.

Piros's two other pups were taken in by her family, and while Bella originally went to a neighbor, who got in contact with the organization. Organizers say Bella has a foster home, and for the time being, they will hold off on adoption applications until she can get healthy.

Weisberg says Bella will require about a month or two of crate rest before she will be available for adoption.

Two teens have pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree in the 2020 death of Ottilia Piros, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has announced. As part of their plea deal, the two will be sentenced to 25 years behind bars, plus 5 years of post-release supervision.

Richard Avila, 18, pleaded guilty Tuesday, while Piros’ daughter Hannah Thomas, 19, pleaded guilty on Wednesday for causing the death of Piros according to the MCSO.
“Richard Avila and Hannah Thomas murdered Hannah’s mother without provocation or reason,” said Assistant District Attorney Kevin Sunderland. “This senseless murder not only took the life of Ottilia Piros but will also ruin the lives of both Hannah Thomas and Richard Avila. It is the hope of the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office that Ms. Piros’ loved ones can continue to heal from this traumatic homicide that strongly impacted her entire family.”

Avila and Thomas will be sentenced in Youth Part — which handles most of the felony cases for teenagers — on February 28, 2023.
