An Albuquerque mother has been arrested for allegedly abusing her 3-month-old so badly that she’s now blind. Police say Chastity Carson told them the child fell off the couch back in December and two days later started behaving differently.

Doctors say the damage to the child’s brain was far too severe for a fall as described. They say it instead shows she was violently shaken. Doctors say the child will also need a feeding tube for the rest of her life.

Carson has been arrested for child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. KRQE News 13 reached out to CYFD to see if they had any prior dealings with this mother or child.

No information was collected.

how does a 3 month old falls off a couch ? if your baby can roll itself then common sense don't leave your baby anywhere that it can roll off of... the law should start arresting all those abusive couches and beds, my gosh how do they build those couches and beds now a days?? mine never, not even once, ever abused on of my babies and once my little ones became little climbers i made sure to keep an eye on my toddlers and teach them the word "no" like no climbing on furniture, no jumping on furniture or a safe place for them to play but also i always made sure they had a tot size chair of their own and that they were picked up by a parent to cuddle up with them in mommy or daddy's cuddle up chair :) or with mom and dad on the couch,

Now the child will be at risk of being abused her entire life by shitty care takers.

Whether she is placed with family or a foster/adoptive parent they may not be capable of caring for her or only doing it for the money.

If she is placed in an assisted living facility she may not get the love and nurture a child needs.

Not all but many of the people who work there are not anyone I would want around my child.

Michael Patrick, a spokesman for the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, said the office received a petition from the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department to pursue charges against the mother. The court document says that after state social workers initiated a safety plan, Carson violated it by requesting to be alone with the baby.

A CYFD spokesman declined to comment on the case or give any details.

{Of course they won't comment because the person they placed with the child should not have been chosen.}

Patrick said prosecutors will file a motion to detain Carson until trial.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court:

Officers were called to University of New Mexico Hospital around 4:30 a.m. Dec. 16 for a baby who was seizing and unresponsive. Carson told a detective she accidentally knocked the baby off a couch and onto a wooden floor on Dec. 11. Carson said the baby acted normal at first but her condition worsened over the following days, starting with nonstop crying and progressing to her leg twitching and a high fever.

Doctors found “abusive head trauma” such as that caused by violent shaking “with or without head impact” and said the injuries were not consistent with a “short fall as described.”

A doctor told police the baby would’ve been vomiting and lethargic “within minutes” of the injury and that she is “neurologically devastated.”

David Navarro, Carson’s boyfriend and the baby’s father, said it has been “a living nightmare.”

“I’ve been with her for eight years; we have been waiting for this baby. We had three miscarriages … (the baby) changed our lives. There’s no way Chastity would do this kind of thing,” Navarro told the Journal on Friday. “The baby fell; this was an accident.”

Navarro said CYFD took the baby away in January and placed her in his sister’s custody.
{I knew it. She was probably collecting a check while the baby was with the parents}

He said he and Carson have been allowed supervised one-hour visits, four times a week. Navarro said the family is trying to get a second doctor’s opinion because they believe the injuries were the result of a short fall.

Navarro said the baby is no longer in the hospital. He said the couple have been taking parenting classes, going to therapy and doing “anything and everything we can to get our baby back.”

“It’s horrible. I just can’t believe it’s gone to where it’s going right now. It’s just not right,” he said. “CYFD it supposed to help families and reunite. They’re just tearing us apart on the word of one doctor.”

God save this baby do not let him or his fucking sister gain custody of her.

CONVICTED – A jury convicted Chastity Carson of Child abuse resulting in Great Bodily Harm.

In 2019, her 3 month old baby was hospitalized with severe head trauma. The child suffered permanent injuries after Carson failed to get medical attention for the baby two days after the injuries. Expert witnesses testified the horrific injuries were a result of shaking or shaking with impact.

Earlier this year, Carson was found guilty for battery on a peace officer. She is facing a mandatory 18 years incarceration for the child abuse case and 4 years on the battery on a peace officer case.

People like that make me sick! I have the unfortunate privilege of knowing a few like that. Blames everyone but themselves. The child is blind and brain damaged. No idiot would think a roll off the couch could cause such horrible injuries. I also hope the child is safe and far away from these lunatics.
