A man admitted in court Monday that he posted racist online threats toward a mother and her 6-year-old daughter, authorities said Tuesday.
Kyle Powell, 31, pleaded guilty to a second-degree bias crime charge and a separate aggravated assault charge, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner said in a news statement.
Powell saw photos of the girl, who is biracial, on MeetMe.com. On June 28, 2018, he posted racially offensive words and threatened violence under those photos, Tyner said.
The girl’s mother notified the New Jersey State Police, who worked with the prosecutor’s office to find Powell based on his profile on the app.
Powell later gave a statement to officers that he is offended by interracial relationships. As part of Powell’s plea, he admitted he made the posts specifically to intimidate the mother and daughter because of their race.
After he was arrested, Powell was sent to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. On Nov. 7, 2018, he punched and kicked an inmate at the jail, causing significant bodily injury. He also resolved that charge with the plea Monday before Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Waldman.
