A 2-year-old boy was found dead and a 37-year-old man has been booked into jail on a preliminary murder charge after a standoff in Elkhart County that lasted more than 18 hours.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office was initially called around 9:05 p.m. Saturday to a home in Baugo Township to check the welfare of a man and his two children.

Deputies attempted to make contact with the man, but they were unsuccessful. Police later learned the man was armed and threatened to harm his children and law enforcement.
Elkhart County Regional SWAT was called to the scene around 12:10 a.m. Sunday, but the man refused to exit and reportedly fired his weapon several times outside of the house toward police before barricading himself inside. At this time, officials do not believe any officers fired back.

Indiana State Police SWAT was called to the scene later Sunday morning and took over negotiation duties.
After hours of failed attempts at negotiations, Sgt. Bohner says ISP SWAT made its way into the home around 3:30 p.m. and took the man, identified as 37-year-old Ryan Snyder, into custody. Snyder was taken to the hospital to be checked out before he was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail on a preliminary murder charge, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Police found a 2-year-old boy inside the home who was dead. According to sources the 2-year-old boy was Snyder’s son. Officials are now looking into the cause of the boy’s death.

The other child, a 4-year-old girl, is said to be okay considering the traumatic circumstances. She was treated at the scene and released to a relative.

I think the police should have the right to blow the head/heads off of these type of Animals if there is 100% proof right there that they've killed a child or anyone for that matter

It would save time & money

Ryan Snyder, 38, received a total sentence of 45 years in prison, with 15 years suspended, after admitting to a charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the Level 1 felony as well as admitting to Level 6 felony counts of neglect and criminal recklessness.
Ryan Snyder killed son Jaxon Snyder during an 18-hour standoff with police starting on July 6, 2024. He admitted that he smothered the boy to death while lying on top of him, because according to his perception of events, he needed to shield him from police gunfire.
In his own brief remarks ahead of sentencing, Ryan Snyder said he felt remorse for causing his son’s death and apologized to law enforcement for putting them in harm’s way.

“I dearly miss my son. I would give anything to have him back,” he said. “I am sorry my actions resulted in me being in this courtroom under these circumstances.”

Here's the thing, if you've been diagnosed with severe mental illness and you have loved ones, it is your gawd damned responsibility to get treatment to stay stable. I get so frustrated with patients that repeatedly go off their meds, destabilize, and then scare/hurt their loved ones, especially children. Over and over again they get hospitalized, regret the pain they've inflicted and then stop their meds when they "feel fine."
