According to a press release, officers were dispatched around 9 a.m. to the 4500 block of Spring Valley Road in reference to a female not breathing.

Officials say the reporter stated she found her roommate’s 4-year-old daughter unresponsive and ‘beyond help’ in the apartment.

The arriving officer found the child to be ‘cold to the touch.’ The Evansville Fire Department began working to revive the child. She was transported to the hospital and at this time she is still alive but has very little brain activity.
The mother, later identified as 23-year-old Destiny F. Rhoades, was at work when her daughter was found, and returned to the apartment.

Rhoades’ 16-year-old boyfriend was located inside of the apartment along with three other adult females who also live there.

All four adult residents were transported to EPD headquarters and interviewed by detectives. The 16-year-old was not interviewed due to his age.

Police say while interviewing Rhoades, she stated she went to work around 7:00 a.m. and reported that her daughter was asleep at that time.
A roommate stated that she noticed the child had bruises on her body Wednesday, specifically around her neck area. She also had a human bite mark on her forearm.

Detectives were told the 16-year-old boyfriend admitted he bit the child, but only after she bit him first.

A roommate reported that the child seemed to be ‘staring off and was nauseous’ while in Rhoades’ care last night.

All three of these circumstances went unreported to law enforcement or medical staff during their occurrence.

Rhoades has been arrested and booked in the Vanderburgh County on charges of Neglect of a Dependent, Contributing to Delinquency of a Minor, and Invasion of Privacy.

She is currently being held on a $100,000 bond and is expected back in court on June 20th.

The 16-year-old boyfriend has been arrested and placed at the Youth Care Center for charges of Battery and False Informing.

Should the arresting offenses change, and the juvenile male is waived to adult court, his name will be released at that time.

Evansville Police Department

Detectives uncovered details of incidents involving Rhoades and her juvenile boyfriend since they arrived in Evansville together earlier this year. In February, officers located the 16-year-old juvenile male, who was 15 at the time, after he was reported missing from Fort Wayne, IN. Due to a missing person case being a status offense, officers placed him at Hillcrest Youth Home. He fled the building shortly after. Officers located him again, this time in the company of Rhoades at her residence. He was placed at the Youth Care Center (YCC) and eventually transported back to Fort Wayne. Rhoades was arrested for Contributing to Delinquency of a Minor, a level 4 felony, at that time (case #24-03473). When she was released from jail, she returned to Fort Wayne until her pending court date, around April 11th. Her 16-year-old boyfriend went missing, again, around the time she returned to Evansville for court.

Octavia was a superhero in death

In her final acts of courage, 4-year-old Octavia Aquino saved the lives of two complete strangers: a New York dad plagued with liver failure, and a 2-year-old boy in Wisconsin dying from an enlarged heart.
Speaking with HNGN earlier this week, Octavia's grandmother, Linda Alvarez, said her granddaughter – who was once "so full of life" – died a hero.

"Even though my grandbaby is not here with me – I want more than anything in his world for her to be – she saved someone else," cried Alvarez, "and she's living on and through them."
As Alvarez struggles to accept the harsh reality of Octavia's brutal death, she finds comfort in knowing her precious little girl was able to give the gift of life to others. To her knowledge, Octavia was able to save the lives of at least two people she had never met.
The grandmother learned this after receiving several messages of gratitude on Facebook – first from a woman in New York.
"Her husband received a transplant for kidneys, and they were pediatric kidneys," explained Alvarez. "And the only thing that they were told about the donor is that it was a 4-year-old little girl in Indiana, and that she absolutely knows that it was from Octavia."

The woman's husband experienced renal failure for the past 13 months and "didn't know how much longer he was going to live," said Alvarez. "And they have an 8-year-old special needs child."
A day later, she received another message on Facebook – this time from a Wisconsin mother whose little boy was in heart failure.

"He was born with a heart that was too big. He has had so many complications since he was born," Alvarez wrote on social media Tuesday.
"Time was of the essence for this little boy and his life was in jeopardy. Well, he received Octavia's heart, and it saved his life. The mom is so grateful and kind. She offered to send me a recording of the heartbeat if I want it or when I'm ready. Such a whirlwind of emotions right now."

She added, "One thing is for certain though: I'm so grateful to hear from these people and know my grandbaby is living on in them."
