The father of 1-month-old twins who were found dead in October 2023 has now been charged with capital murder, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Fernando Vega, 21, was originally charged with two counts of injury to a child but now faces murder charges.
At this time, the twins’ mother, Angelina Calderon, is only charged with two counts of injury to a child with serious bodily injury.
- Massail and Mirena Vega were found unresponsive at a home on Linden Creek Lane on Oct. 4, 2023
- The twins were pronounced dead at the scene at 11:22 a.m.
- Fernando Vega told investigators that he was the last one to see the kids alive around 5 a.m. or 6 a.m.
- An autopsy determined that the infants suffered blunt-force trauma
The twins were found unresponsive in October 2023 after police said Vega claimed he left them in his grandmother's care. It wasn't until April 2024 that charges were filed following a complete autopsy that showed bruises, abrasions, and contusions, both new and old. The twins were also severely malnourished and dehydrated, according to the autopsy.
During court on April 22, Angelina Calderon had a loud, emotional outburst as she tried to explain that Vega was the last one with the children.
"I don't care! You're making me look like I'm a bad person," she said in court. "I don't f*****g care. I was at work when they f*****g died."
