Sentenced: 2 Boys Die After Drunk Driving Florida Dad Leaves Them Inside Submerged Car

More than a week after two boys died when a car plunged into a Cape Coral canal, police say the driver and father of the boys had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit.

On Nov. 25, the 2014 Ford Focus with the boys, their father and a friend crashed just before midnight.

Kenneth Lawson III, 29, and Julia Drudy, 31, both of Cape Coral, were taken into custody on Friday and charged as a result of the crash.

Lawson and Drudy arrived on scene, soaking wet, after rescuers removed the boys from the submerged car.

Lawson and Drudy gave multiple conflicting stories including, being carjacked, robbed and being chased by another car causing their car to crash into the canal, the report states.

Several officers stated that they saw signs of impairment from Lawson, such as slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol as he spoke.

While at the hospital, Lawson's blood-alcohol level tested at 0.176 and Drudy's blood-alcohol level tested at 0.129, the report states. The legal level in Florida is 0.08.

Based on Lawson and Drudy's injuries from the crash, seatbelt pattern bruising and a skin transfer under the steering wheel from impact, investigators determined Lawson was driving.

Lawson also had several lacerations on his legs, which was consistent with him kicking out the windshield in front of him to exit the car.
