Local 10 News talked to a man who only identified himself as Johnny who said he was on his bike when he heard the boy screaming for help.
“He was screaming, ‘Help someone, help me, please.’ "
In surveillance video, Johnny, who said he didn’t have a phone, escorts the bleeding boy to the Foodland Market at Northwest 47th Street and 37th Avenue.
“I bring him to the store so they can call the police for him,” Johnny said. “He was conscience, then he fell on the sidewalk and said he had been shot.”
Surveillance video shows the boy walking up to the corner of Northwest 32nd Avenue and Northwest 47th Street where he can be seen collapsing, bleeding from the head, while a person standing next to him calls 911.
Another bystander later brought the boy a towel and a bottle of water while they waited for law enforcement to arrive.
Eventually Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and police escorted the boy to a gurney. He can be seen clutching his head in pain in the video.
Rescue workers rushed him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where at last check, he was in critical condition.
Miami-Dade police have confirmed that a man is in custody in connection with the abduction, sexual assault and shooting of a 12-year-old boy, according to News 6 partner WPLG-TV.
He was identified Tuesday as 43-year-old Aliex Santiesteban.
The boy was sexually assaulted and shot over the weekend, officials said. The boy was temporarily blinded when a bullet struck him in the jaw and went out through the other side of his head, authorities said Monday.
He’s still in a lot of pain as he continues to recover at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Three years after being arrested for kidnapping, raping, and shooting a 12-year-old boy in Brownsville, the suspect is taking a plea agreement.
Aliex Santiesteban, 46, will spend 25 years in a state prison and 10 years on probation. On Wednesday, he appeared on Zoom in a courtroom while the victim’s family read impact statements. Santiesteban kept his face in the palms of his hands for most of the hearing.
Through an interpreter, the victim’s family described how damaging the attack has been for the victim and that “no one leaves this life without paying their debts.”
In March 2021, Santiesteban was charged with attempted murder, sexual battery with a deadly weapon, and kidnapping for the attack on the 12-year-old boy.
Police say the young boy was on his way back home after meeting up with friends when Santiesteban kidnapped him, raped him in the back of his car, shot him in the face and dumped him on the street.
Surveillance video obtained by NBC 6 shows the victim stumbling to a convenience store with help from a good Samaritan who was riding a bike.
After police were called, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but survived the attack
Santiesteban has long denied committing the crime but is now taking the plea agreement which would keep him behind bars until he’s 71 years old.
Before he was sent off to state prison, Santiesteban made one last remark to the victim in court: “Only God knows the truth.”
The victim’s family responded: “The hand of God was there that you were not able to do it.”
