A 6-month-old child was killed Monday afternoon in Atlanta after getting caught in the crossfire of a shootout between two people, according to police.

Authorities received a call of a person shot on Anderson Avenue at 2:56 p.m., Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant said Monday in a news conference.

The baby was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, according to police.

The child's name was not disclosed.

Bryant said the shooting was between “two people involved in gun violence,” and the “child was an innocent victim.”

He said the investigation is in its early stages and investigators are working leads.

“Right now our personnel are down consoling the mother of this child,” Bryant said. “This one hurts, for a 6-month-old to be riding down the street and become victim to gun violence — random gun violence between two people who can’t resolve a simple issue."

The shooting marked the third death of a child under the age of six in Atlanta this year alone, Mayor Andre Dickens said Monday.

“These children are bearing the burden and the pain of adults who are choosing to use guns to solve disputes,” Dickens said. “The children are bearing this burden with their lives. And I’m here to ask and to demand that it stop right now.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta Police Department announced an arrest in connection to the death of the 6-month-old boy on Monday in a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

According to APD, a 22-year-old man named Dequasie Jonathan Little was arrested in Decatur.

The child, identified as Grayson Fleming, was in the car with his mother near Anderson Avenue NW and Tiger Flowers Drive NW when their car was hit by gunfire.

During the press conference, the Atlanta Police Chief said he is "mad as hell" that this incident occurred.

So far, there have been 3 children shot this year.

Kerri Gray went back to the scene Tuesday morning, standing near the spot where her 6-month-old baby was shot and killed while clinging to his favorite toy.

"All these lights shine to make stars and moons," said Gray. "This is how he went to sleep every night."

The new mother was by the food mart in northwest Atlanta when she heard sudden popping sounds.

"When I went and opened up the back door he was slumped forward, and I thought he was asleep. And the bullet had gone through the trunk and through his eye and up his back," said Gray.

Police say the pair were innocent bystanders, caught in the crossfire of a shooting. Grayson died at the hospital.

"I still can't get the blood off my hands," said Gray.

Grayson's grandfather, a retired homicide detective, broke down at the crime scene.

"He was a 6-month-old baby. He wasn't doing anything to anybody […] he just started to crawl. You knew he was he was finally started to recognize you when you came in," he said.

Gray said the shooter needed to understand consequences.

"What you're doing has collateral damage. I'm almost positive that that guy -- whatever has happened, whatever was going on his mind -- has no idea what wake he left behind," said Gray. "Not only have you taken my son away from me, but you have caused fear for the people who live in this neighborhood."

Now what's left is the memories of her one and only son.

"He was very animated -- the personality came out with him on day one," said Gray.

A second person is in custody following the shooting death of a 6-month-old child.

According to Atlanta Police, Sharice Ingram is currently being charged with being a party to the crime of aggravated assault and party to the crime of felony murder.

Fleming's mother, Kerri Gray, told 11Alive on Wednesday that she felt confident police would soon capture everyone responsible for shooting and killing her son.

“I opened up the (car) door and I saw him slumped over and I thought he was sleeping, because he sleeps like that, sometimes,” Gray said, recalling the moment she realized Grayson had been shot. "I happened to look down and saw the blood all over his clothes, so I quickly grabbed him out of his car seat, and I just held him and screamed for somebody to call 911.”

Gray later stated she doesn't believe the suspects intended to kill Grayson but that "it doesn't matter" if they meant to or not.

“I don’t want to hear that, ‘I didn’t intend to shoot your child,’" she exclaimed. "Your games that you’re playing... your behavior... ended a beautiful, beautiful soul. My son’s blood is on your hands. My son’s lifeless body is at your feet. You did this.”

I hope mom is comforted knowing so many people showed love to Grayson.

Sharice Ingram was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in the shooting that killed 6-month-old Grayson Fleming Gray in January 2022.

The shooting occurred on Anderson Avenue when Grayson and his mother, Kerri Gray, were caught in the crossfire as Ingram and her co-defendant, Dequaisie Little, fired more than 26 shots at another vehicle.
The mother says no sentence will ever bring her baby back.

Kerri Gray says she was emotional describing all she lost while just driving down the street with her son.
“My son does not know the joys of being celebrated, only mourned,” she said.
Gray wanted the court to know what she lost when Sharice Ingram and Dequasie Little fired more than 26 shots at another car, but hit and killed 6-month-old Grayson Fleming Gray.

“Grayson has missed four birthdays, five complete sets of holiday seasons, his first day of school,” she said.
Gray told the court Ingram has made some bad choices.

“And now I’m asking the court to hear me when I beg you to put an end to the possibility of these choices being made again,” she said.
Prosecutors said it was in January 2022 when Grayson and his mother were innocent bystanders as they drove on Anderson Avenue.

They said that’s when Ingram was behind the wheel when Little fired all those shots at his ex-girlfriend’s car.
“So as defendant Little is shooting, one of the bullets hits baby Grayson and he passes away,” Assistant District Attorney Asia Baysah said.

Ingram’s attorney Matt Tucker says she had no idea what was about to happen and went to police when she learned Grayson had died.

“And she even explained who the people were in the front car that was shooting back at them. She gave them names, address and everything,” Tucker said.

He said Ingram agreed to plead guilty in a non-negotiated plea deal. The judge then sentenced Ingram to 25 years, to serve 20 behind bars.
Ingram’s co-defendant, Dequaisie Little, was sentenced to life in prison in March.
