A grandfather shot his mask-wearing grandson who was breaking into his home before 9 a.m. Thursday morning, according to authorities.

Officials say the grandfather did not know it was his grandson who was wearing a mask and invading his home.

The two had a scuffle when the shot was fired, leaving the grandson seriously hurt. The grandson is in critical condition in Charlotte.

The grandfather was also hurt, but has been released from the hospital.

Police have identified the grandson as 34-year-old Jessie Gibson. Gibson had been living at a motel about a mile from where the home invasion occurred.

Officials say that’s where he ran to after being shot, and then a friend called 911.

Jessie Gibson, 34, died at Carolinas Medical Center on Tuesday, April 20 a week after being shot while invading his grandfather's home.

Police say Gibson had forcefully entered his 76-year-old grandfather’s home and attempted to steal money. Police say Gibson was wearing a mask that covered his entire face and head when he broke into the home.

Once inside, police say Gibson assaulted his grandfather, tried to steal money and pointed a piston at him. As a result, police say the grandfather shot Gibson.

During crime scene search, authorities found Gibson’s cell phone in his grandfather’s driveway and his mask in the woods not far away from the home.

At the time of the incident, police say the grandfather was home alone and did not know the masked man was his grandson.

The investigation also revealed that Gibson’s motive for the home invasion was the need of money to pay rent.

On April 21, District Attorney Scott Reilley met with officials from the Long View Police Department and was briefed on the facts of the investigation.

DA Reilley did a deep-dive into evidence and a full scope summary and review of facts of the investigation, officials say. Reilly concluded that Gibson kicked in the front door, assaulted his grandfather and attempted to rob him.

Furthermore, it was determined that the grandfather was in fear for his life and only used deadly force after his grandson pointed a gun at him. After the briefing and reviewing a facts, DA Reilly determined no charges would be filed against the grandfather and his actions were justified.

The grandfather has been hospitalized from complications that resulted from the assault but is in sable condition.

I realize that the pandemic has been hard on a lot of people and many have lost jobs, homes, and businesses. Many people cannot pay rent (hence why there is a rent moratorium, which also puts out landlords and property owners because they are not getting the rent). I don't know what this dude's circumstances were and realize he was living in a motel. Something tells me that if this was his situation at age 34, he was making a series of fuck ass life choices, long before the pandemic hit last year. The choice to try to invade his grandfather's home with a mask and a weapon instead of asking for help was the very last poor decision he will ever make. I wonder if the rest of the family was reluctant to help because he didn't want to help himself by getting a job or knew that any money they contribute would go towards some vice like drugs or gambling.

I dont know why it would/should matter whether or not gramps knew the identity of the scum.
Your right in the aspect it really didn’t matter who it was.. he was being physically attacked and defended himself.. really would not have mattered.. he still would have been trying to defend himself.. it doesn’t help the situation for his peace of mind it was his grandkid..
