A pregnant bulldog was abandoned in a baby pool beside a dumpster behind an elementary school Wednesday, according to Richmond Animal Care and Control.

The pregnant dog was found at 5:30 p.m. behind Norrell Elementary School.

According to RACC, bulldogs’ anatomy requires them to have a C-section since they cannot typically reproduce on their own.

The dog was transported to VVC and was confirmed to have multiple dead puppies inside of her.

As of Thursday morning, RACC said the dog was put through surgery and puppies were removed and she is now spayed.

She has pneumonia and RACC is hoping for her survival.

The shelter posted an update on Facebook on Tuesday evening. The dog, now named Mama Hope Elizabeth, is still fighting for her life.

“Whoever owned this dog, knew she was pregnant (hence the baby pool) and abandoned her when she needed help the most,” RACC said in a Facebook post.

The dog was taken to the vet, where it was confirmed she had multiple dead puppies inside her.

“We don’t know how long she has been suffering and we hope she isn’t septic. If she’s stable enough, she will have surgery tonight to remove the dead puppies and spay her so she never has to go through anything like this again. If she’s not able to live through surgery, we will hug her close and euthanize,” RACC said.

Update time! First, she is still alive (barely) but there we are. Second, we named her Mama Hope Elizabeth (after the vet that did her surgery).

We have been completely overwhelmed by your response to this sweet girl and her sad story. Please note: she is still in critical condition; she may not be able to fight the infection and it’s very touch and go. We almost called it this afternoon, but vasopressors helped stabilize her. Many of you have reached out with adoption interest-we are so far from that right now-our focus remains on helping Hope stay alive. Thank you!

Nót big on animals that can't function without vet intervention for even normal birth.
It just seems really wrong.
The reason they 'cant' have puppies natural is because all the puppies are born with the brachycephalic head shape, combined with over breeding thats given bulldogs a notoriously bad pelvis structure, means the risk is high that one gets stuck which will kill mom and babies. Any smooshed faced breed technically requires a vet on call because the puppies heads can become wedged.

Humans require help getting wedged babies out all the time. Its really no different aside the fact that we have usually only 1 to get out, they have multiples. If you're pregnant with multiples you get a c-section too regardless if they are wedged or not.

Whats wrong is dumping a dog thats in labor and clearly needs help.

hat about humans that can't function or go through birth without a doctor's intervention? Some people and animals are birth with birth defects. As for a female dog in heat, I doubt she was like "hop on up there then let me go through and excruciating life to try to have your puppies who DIE INSIDE of me and I almost die too". Most animals aren't discovered until it's too late. They don't go to the GYNO yearly and don't have exams like that at the OB once pregnant. All it takes is one huge puppy to block the canal. That's not even a defect.

I adopted my english bulldog from the shelter where I was volunteering. She was dumped because she couldn't have puppies (i.e. not a money maker). She was suffering from demodex mange, had severe food allergies, was very underweight, and was in heat. Poor thing looked awful. She lived with me for 10 years and never had to want for anything. She's been gone a little over 4 years and I still miss her goofy self. I hope this baby makes it, and she gets the best life ever.
