A non- White homeless man accused of attacking an Asian woman on her way to a protest against anti-Asian violence in Manhattan over the weekend was arrested on hate crime charges on Monday, police said.

Erick Deoliveira, 27, allegedly punched the 37-year-old victim twice in her face on Astor Place near Fourth Avenue at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, cops said.

Before the attack, Deoliveira asked the woman for a sign she was carrying — and she obliged, asking him what he intended to do with it, according to police.

He attempted to put the sign in a garbage can, but then placed it on the ground and stomped on it instead, cops said.

When the victim asked why he did that, he allegedly attacked her.

The victim suffered a cut and bruising on her lip and a sprained ankle as she tried to chase her attacker. She was taken to Lenox Hill Healthplex Hospital for her injuries.

Deoliveira was also charged with assault and criminal mischief as a hate crime, cops said.

The woman says the suspect approached her and asked for her sign. She thought he was heading to the rally so she gave it to him and that's when she saw him tearing it up and stuffing it a trash can.

When she asked him to stop, he hit her twice in the face, so she chased him.

"He was destroying the sign and trying to put it in the trash can, so I walked forward and towards him saying, 'What are you doing?' And he just came in front of me and punched me in the face, and then I think I stopped for a little bit, and then I chased him. And there were some people around as well, and I just wanted to get him and call the police," the victim said.

Several good Samaritans ran after him into the Astor Place subway stations and were able to take photos of the attacker.
They said the suspect appeared to be emotionally disturbed before getting away on a train.

"He also flashed people on the train platform. He dropped his underwear and showed his genitalia to everyone on the platform," Francis said.

According to the NYPD there have been 23 anti-Asian hate crimes so far this year, compared to 29 during all of 2020.

"...he hit her twice in the face, so she chased him." <---Wtf... look I'm not trying to blame the victim for the attack or any of that nonsense... but seriously... WTF?!? You've got your young daughter with you... you get attacked by an "emotionally disturbed" homeless person... and after punching her a couple of times, he decides to leave... and her instinct is to go after him?!? Freakin' brilliant!

So what was her daughter supposed to do at that moment? Was she supposed to just stand there all alone while her dumb ass mother goes after a crazy homeless dude... or better yet, was her mom expecting for her daughter to follow along/ keep up, thus putting her into a dangerous situation?

And what the Hell was she gonna do when she caught up to him? She's not Ronda Rousey. He would've beaten her ass down (..leaving her with far more injuries and further traumatizing her daughter..)... or worse, if the crazy dude had a knife or whatever, she could've been killed (..'cause that's always good for a child's mental health... watching mommy get beaten and killed all because mommy decided to chase after some nut job..).

I mean... the article even said that "several good Samaritans ran after him..."... and at that point, her priority should have been her safety and the safety of her daughter. Period. That's not being "empowered"... and that's not standing up for herself... that's inviting a potential disaster for her and her entire family (..especially the daughter..) by pursuing a situation that she clearly did not have the ability to safely control or contain.

And look... don't get me wrong... I'm not denying she was the victim of a violent & unprovoked attack, but I do have a problem with her endangering herself and potentially her daughter (..ie - what if her daughter had chased after mommy...like a lot of kids would do... and she got dragged into the melee..). That's just stupid...
