A teenager in New Jersey thought she was doing the right thing by turning her anger over a lack of affordable housing into social activism, but, now, she has a pricey fight on her hands.

Emily Gil organized a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Englewood Cliffs in July, but she was shocked when she unexpectedly received a bill for the police response to that protest.

The demonstration next to police headquarters had about 30 people in attendance, but it led to a police overtime bill of nearly $2,500.

"I was shocked when I read the letter," she said. "I felt a little disrespected because the tone of the letter was kind of condescending."

The 18-year-old has been an activist in her town, and she had alerted officials about her protest and said any police presence at the event was barely visible.

"He sort of imposed a police presence on the protest," she said. "He said, 'So now that you've alerted me that this is going on, I'm going to have to send the police to you.' So it wasn't something that I specifically requested. It was something that he imposed on me."

The letter from Mayor Mario Kranjac cited the presence of local and county authorities to protect the protest and citizens, and the mayor wrote the letter on city stationery and defended his actions.

"We incurred expenses, which we often do when there's outside events coming through town," he said. "And I sent her a bill for the police overtime."

Kranjac also suggested in his letter that Gil donate some of her time to help a local food bank. He says the bill for overtime is routine.

Gil said she has responded but has not gotten an answer over her questions about the bill and where the money should be sent to address the overtime bill.

Englewood Cliffs Democratic Council members say they will seek to cancel the bill and are calling on Mayor Kranjac to publicly apologize.

Not saying that she isn't a naive tard,

but,

she should ideally never pay that bill, and find some way to work around it if they try to fuck her for not paying.

That's just abuse on top of abuse. Like, a police department insisting on raising special funds in order to justify using DNA analysis to solve cold cases.

If she was the cause for the overtime she should be billed as all protest organizers should be. It’s not right to have those not participating in the protest paying the expense of those protesting. I think she should pay the bill, problems are created by council members like these everywhere. Protest organizers should also be held responsible for the cost of the looting and burning. Why should my taxes be used to pay for your protest, you have a right to protest, but you don’t have a right to make me pay

@Sugar Cookie I'm not crapping on you. Just the stupid mfkas that charged this lady

So was she protesting that she couldn’t find affordable housing for herself? I’m just not understanding why an 18 year old Asian girl started a BLM protest over housing. Unless it was housing for people in poverty?
This! That is a weird way to protest for housing.

Protest organizers shouldn't need to pay for the police presence. It's not our fault you don't have enough officers to cover the shift.

ETA: The mayor said this: “I was told that all private events requiring police overtime should be paid for by the organizers. It was never intended as a fine, but rather as a fee,” said Kranjac in the letter to Gil.

So now my question is this: Is a protest a private or public event? Because I'm thinking it's public. And what are police officers? PUBLIC servants

It’s an unwanted event, except for those participating and they should foot the bill for whatever extra services are required
My taxes have better uses than paying overtime for your event, that’s an inconvenience to me to begin with

Knock it off. How is it an inconvenience to you? Can you tell me what percentage of your tax dollars would actually go to the event? Out of ALLL the citizens of that city who also pay taxes, how much would you be "inconvenienced"? 10 cents? Less? For real. I wanna know

Yall hate BLM so much, I'm starting to wonder what you REALLY think about black ppl

They block streets, as I’m trying to go coach the after school program, leaving the kids without supervision for hours and parents can’t get to the kids to pick them up

So they protest in your exact location every time you have to coach? How inconvenienced do you think black ppl are as a race? You do realize our inconvenience is the reason for these protests, right?

iI never said black peopleI, I used my experience as an example, since you asked how it was an inconvenience. I’m sure many others have been inconvenienced for many other reasons. You block a highway and thousands are inconvenienced and pissed off. The few times I’ve seen stranded drivers interviewed they were all pissed, guess that’s why the liberal press no longer interviews the blocked drivers, goes against their agenda
Edit
I feel protesters have driven away many ex supporters this way, even if you’re pro the cause you’re not happy sitting in your car for hours when you need to get somewhere

I see no reason why there shouldn't be consequences for protesters if there is supposed to be consequences for innocent people interfered with by protesters.
The same shit happened when people were protesting the Afgan War and other events.

I don't understand why protesters are allowed to do this, especially when it's plotted and intended to disrupt accessibility.
Some cities allow it too much, others don't allow it at all.

At least they're living, unlike so many ppl who are the reason for the protests. And I get it. I hate to be late anywhere but this isn't about traffic. It's about having to pay to protest. That's dumb.

I organized a protest this summer. In FRONT on the police department. Did I get a bill? Nope. I spoke with the captain and was supported in my right to a peaceful protest. The cops even gave us a case of water

Well, these protestors aren't asking; they're just doing and adding on shit like setting the precincts on fire and looting and burning stores. This may very well harm the very people they claim to be protesting on behalf of, but it doesn't matter as long as their leftist agenda is front and center. The BLM movement is Marxist (in their own words) and they've been trained in Marxist tactics. It's just that they don't openly explain this to their supporters, and people aren't recognizing this when they see it.

Behold the handiwork of BLM!

@Prettypink513, I know you're a loving and sincere person, and I do very much wish BLM was the beneficial organization you believe it is.
