Wednesday afternoon the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office charged Alexandra Richardson with murder in the death of her 20-month-old son who died in a Nashville hospital Tuesday due to injuries sustained when Richardson drove around a “road closed” sign and into a flooded creek on Oak Hill Road Monday evening, .
At 6:22 p.m. Monday, Edmonson County emergency personnel were dispatched to Oak Hill Road after Richardson’s car became submerged when she drove over a low water bridge, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Richardson and her seven-year-old son made it out of the water, but the toddler, Carson McCullough, was lost.
Several volunteer fire departments, Edmonson EMS, Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office, Brownsville Police and the Edmonson County Rescue Squad responded. After the Rescue Squad entered the water with a boat, the toddler was located in the water and rescue efforts continued. The toddler was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center at Bowling Green and later flown to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville. The toddler died at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.
“She is obviously very remorseful, very upset, as far as the specifics of the interview, I am not going to get involved in that at this point,” said Sgt. Wally Ritter, Edmonson County Sheriff’s Department.
Richardson and her older son were treated and released Monday.
Edmonson County Sheriff Shane Doyle and Sgt. Wally Ritter responded to the hospital to interview Richardson. The release reads that Richardson admitted to recently using methamphetamine and marijuana and also admitted that she had driven across the flooded bridge several times in the past and didn’t think it was that deep.
The next morning, the sheriff’s office obtained a search warrant for Richardson’s medical records, which confirmed the presence of methamphetamine and marijuana in her blood at the time she arrived at the hospital Monday, according to the release.
“The night after the collision myself and Sheriff Doyle went to the hospital and spoke with her. She made admissions to using methamphetamine and marijuana. We used that information to request a search warrant for her medical records and get copies of her blood results, her blood tests, which showed positive for marijuana and methamphetamine,”
