A Lancaster mother was charged with homicide by child abuse Tuesday – almost three years to the day after her daughter was allegedly bludgeoned to death and her boyfriend who is now her husband was also charged in the crime, according to police and jail officials.

April Victoria Gleason, formerly April Snipes, 30, was charged Tuesday with aiding and abetting homicide by child abuse and two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child in the killing of Soren Victoria Chilson...

April Gleason could face as much as 40 years in prison if convicted. She was denied bond Tuesday afternoon during her first court appearance.

It is unclear what new information came to light that pushed police to not just add neglect charges to Phillip Gleason, but also charge Soren’s mother with homicide as being part of the alleged brutality of child abuse that led to her death.

Soren, 5, died after her skull was smashed March 5, 2013, police and prosecutors have said in previous court hearings. April Gleason’s former boyfriend, whom she married on Jan. 23, 2014, Phillip Gleason, was charged after the crime with homicide by child abuse and has been out on $150,000 bond for three years pending trial.

During a 2013 court hearing, April Gleason was said to have been at work at the time Soren was found, with Phillip Gleason watching the child. Soren’s father is deceased.

Gleason told authorities he carried the girl to the bathroom when she started choking and coughing up blood after suffering a seizure. It’s a defense his lawyer, Rock Hill attorney Chris Wellborn, maintains.

The girl’s injuries are consistent with wounds that can be found from a variety of other conditions, Wellborn said. He debunks theories about shaken baby syndrome, which has been controversial in the courts and questioned by scientists over its validity as an explanation for a child’s death.

“It’s scientifically untenable. There has been enough that has come out in the past 10 years to show most of what we thought about shaken baby was absolutely wrong,” said Wellborn, who often consults with or represents clients accused in shaken baby cases. “It’s as scientifically reliable as saying the earth is flat. Effectively, it’s junk science.”

Conditions resulting in shaken baby diagnoses include swelling of the brain, bleeding in the brain and bleeding in the eyes. Critics say shaking a baby is not the only way children can suffer those injuries. Wellborn said he typically consults with other professionals and sources in alleged shaken baby cases.

Unfortunately Lawyers will say anything to win their case, even twist the facts. I am not an expert but I think 5 years old shouldn't be classified as shaken baby syndrome. More like battered child syndrome.

The egg said through tears to a court that she was 'not a monster' and Soren was the 'joy of her life'.

You let a monster torture your child and than married him- so yes you are monster.

One of the first responders testified in court that the girl 'endured a living hell.' He shed tears as he told the court that he held her hand as she died.

He was the only one who showed this child compassion in her final moments.
