A punk shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Monday morning shortly after she had called police for help, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies initially responded to a call from the woman, Kayelyn Ford, at about 3:30 a.m. at her home in Central. She told deputies that she thought her ex-boyfriend was using an old key to access her apartment in the Tanglewood Apartments complex.

Court records show that Ford had filed for and received a protective order against Brandon Bell, 24, in April.
Deputies searched the residence and, when they didn’t locate anyone inside, Ford told them that she and her friend would stay somewhere else for the time being.
Minutes after deputies left the apartment, the ex-boyfriend exited a nearby wooded area and ambushed Ford as she was leaving her apartment. He allegedly shot and killed her and then shot himself, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Ford, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, Bell, was transported to the hospital.

“He is not expected to make it,” the Sheriff’s Office said. Bell had also allegedly stolen his grandparents’ vehicle in Ascension Parish and used it to travel to Ford’s home.
