Okay, gotta say it. We have pasture land on 3 sides of our house, populated by several head of cattle, and a barn out back. There are currently 2 feral cats that have moved into the barn, and they are welcome. We leave food and water out there for them. There are always one or two at any given time, because it's a mutually beneficial relationship. We feed, water and shelter them (by not chasing them from the barn) and they keep the rats out of the hay. Even though they have a barn with hay to shelter in, we STILL make blanket-nests for them and set up an old clothes dryer in the loft with a vent that blows down on the blanket-nest/food and water dishes area in the ground level for the sole purpose of keeping them warm when it's cold out. Either my hubby or I go out before bed and turn the dryer on- never anything in it, just running it empty-so they have warm air from the vent. Kinda crazy way to go about warming them, but you can't put a heater in a barn full of hay and sleep well, you know? LOL.
If we can do that for feral cats who squat in our barn, why can't people who claim to love pets protect those pets from the elements?! I just don't get that.
