More than eight months later, detectives charged 50-year-old Alvetta J. Haskins, the infant’s grandmother, with second-degree murder. Police said Haskins was babysitting the child at her home at the time. According to the criminal complaint, the medical examiner determined the baby’s death was caused by an overdose of an anti-psychotic medication prescribed to treat mood disorders.
The complaint states Haskins admitted giving the child “several medications” but denied administering any prescribed medication. A search of her medical records confirmed the anti-psychotic found in the infant’s blood was prescribed to Haskins.
