Stephanie Hatcher, 29, originally took her 2-year-old to CHI Health in Grand Island, where she was then told that because of a rare blood disorder he would need to be transported to UNMC for further treatment.
According to a press release, staff in the hospital offered to take her child by ambulance, but Hatcher “refused” saying she would take him herself. Officers were called to the hospital after Hatcher returned with the child later that day and had not transported him to Omaha.
Police said they were told Hatcher did not take him to UNMC due to having car troubles and doing laundry. Police then concluded that Hatcher had not reasonably done everything she could to transport her child to Omaha.
“[Hatcher] fail[ed] to take any steps to find transport or other resources today to ensure her child was brought to UNMC for the treatment he needed,” a police report read. “It was found that [Hatcher] would intentionally place her child in a situation that endangers his life due to not letting ambulance transport and not arranging other transportation to get him to UNMC for the proper care needed for his life threatening condition.”
the child was life flighted to Omaha and placed under the auspices of DHHS. As for the mother she was placed under arrest.
